The Transylvania Family Holiday package is an ideal way for you to enjoy the whole experience of travelling to Romania together as a family unit. This attention to the needs of a family begins with a choice of family-friendly accommodation such as good quality family-run guest houses and small hotels. In our opinion, the smaller and more traditional places to stay are a great way to meet the local people and to experience the incredible variety of Romanian culture and countryside activities on offer.

We have designed the holiday to be flexible so that we can meet the needs of most families, this means there is a fabulous choice of activities, some are included and others can be pre-booked as part of the holiday itinerary. The most popular are guided city tours, guided day hikes with a home-made picnic lunch, 4WD tours of the mountain villages, traditional cookery classes, encounters with wildlife such as bears, visiting castles and much more....

The version on this page is based upon a superb guest house in Zarnesti (near Bran) and includes a private city tour, a guided day hike, cookery class and all private transfers between locations.

We can also arrange this holiday for any reasonable date between May and October as a Private Journey for a minimum of 4 persons.

Itinerary

Fly into Bucharest International Airport. On arrival meet with your guide and drive north through the stunning Prahova Valley to Predeal where your journey takes a smaller road over the mountain pass to Rasnov and on to your base for the next few days, the traditional village of Zarnesti.

Your hosts at the fabulous Hora cu Brazi guest house will provide a warm welcome and after check-in a delicious home-cooked dinner. A short briefing meeting with your guide follows and then time to properly relax and settle in ahead of the activities and adventures to come.

Time to make the most of your time in this mysterious corner of Transylvania.

Depending upon weather forecasts, days of the week and any local festivals the next three days are devoted to the following:

  • Castle visits - Bran (Dracula's castle) & Rasnov Fortress
  • Peles Castle in Sinaia with optional wine tasting at nearby Rhein Cellars
  • Guided hike with picnic lunch in the local hills and forest
  • Visit to Libearty (Bear) Sanctuary just outside Zarnesti
  • Cookery class, including time to explore locally-grown ingredients
  • Sightseeing in Brasov, including funicular ride (optional visit to Prejmer fortified church)

Day 5 - leisurely breakfast and possibly more activities in morning. Drive from Zarnesti to Sibiu in afternoon and stay in small traditional hotel in historic old town. Dinner in a local restaurant overlooking the square (or in the cellar).

Day 6 - morning sightseeing tour of Sibiu followed by free time for some shopping or further independent sightseeing; optional visit to the Museum of Steam Locomotives. Free evening to explore and choose your own dinner (there is lots of choice in Sibiu).

  • May, (early) June & October - scenic drive through Olt Valley.
  • (late) June, July, August & September - drive along Transfagarasan Highway with sightseeing stops at Balea Lake and other scenic spots.

- on to Curtea de Arges to visit monastery then final drive to Bucharest. A traditional dinner can be arranged for your group upon request.

** May & June - we can include a partial drive along the Transfagarasan Highway and a cable car ride up to Balea Lake on Day 6 if the whole road is not passible (it usually opens fully by end of June).

After breakfast there is time for a guided walking tour of the main sights of central Bucharest's old city followed by a wander down the tree-lined avenue to the Palace of the Parliament (optional tour of interior).
