Croatia Self Drive 02 - Dubrovnik Circuit

Dubrovnik - Mali Ston - Hvar - Split - Plitvice - Dubrovnik

Summary

A holiday in southern Croatia touring the Dalmatian Coast, Adriatic Islands & Plitvice National Park.

START / FINISH - Dubrovnik

Activity code: CRFD02

Duration: 10 Days

In just over a week you can explore the Croatian coast thoroughly by land and sea and get as far inland as the fabulous Plitvice National Park. On this holiday itinerary we include Dubrovnik, a choice of Adriatic islands, the stunningly beautiful Dalmatian coast, the cities of Split and Zadar and two incredibly national parks - Plitvice Lakes and Krka.

Your journey of exploration begins straight away by driving directly from the airport. Just a short distance up the coast to Ston you can sample the freshest oysters and walk the incredibly extensive ancient walls. An alternative route would be to consider travelling inland from the airport directly into Bosnia & Herzegovina visiting the lovely littel town of Trebinje then continue through the countryside to Mostar. Mostar's dramatic bridge, which was lovingly reconstructed after the war of the 1990s, and its old town atmosphere is well worth an overnight stay as either an extra night or an alternative to Ston.

Each day's driving is not a large distance so you have plenty of time to do some sightseeing, walking or to take an extended lunch (or picnic) along the way. After your initial introduction to Croatia it is time to take to the sea for a short crossing to Hvar Island and another incredible drive along the spine of the island to the lovely Hvar Town in the west. After a night or two return to the mainland at Split and stay either in the historic city centre or in nearby Trogir (it is easy to travel between them on the small ferry across the bay).

After Split there is a beautiful drive inland to the world-famous Plitvice Lakes National Park for a couple of nights so you can have at least one full day to explore the park. Return to the coast by driving to the lovely old town of Zadar which also has some innovative new sights up its sleeve. The final section of your holiday is heading back down to Dubrovnik but you may choose to break the journey and do some rafting or try the mulit-zip-wire experience in the Cetina Valley.

We feel that the best finale to this holiday is a few nights in Dubrovnik where you can relax, enjoy some activities and sightseeing without your car as the local buses and cable car offer an excellent service for local exploration.

However, if you have a few extra days you may wish to consider a few days in Montenegro which can be tailored to your preference between the beach resort of Budva with its tranquil old town and Kotor with its impressive walls, historic buildings and challenging walk up the "staircase" to the fortress high above.

Highlights

Itinerary

Arrive into Dubrovnik; take hire car from airport and drive to Korcula. Visit Trsteno Arboretum and the walls at Ston en route as wells as enjoying the scenery of the Peljesac Peninsula. If you have a flight arrival later in the day or don't wish to drive so far then you could elect to stay in Ston or nearby Ravno.

** An alternative would be a drive inland from the airport to the lovely little town of Trebinje in Bosnia & Herzegovina, then continue through the incredible Bosnian countryside to Mostar.

A relaxing morning in Korcula Town then take the ferry back to Orebic followed by a short drive for another relatively quick ferry crossing over to Ploce (thereby avoiding retracing your steps down the peninsula AND through the Bosnia Corridor). From Ploce head along the coast road visiting the Zaostrog Monastery prior to taking a final short ferry crossing to the eastern tip of Hvar Island from Drvenik. Once across drive along the stunning road which traces the spine of the island, passing the capital, Stari Grad, all the way to the west coast and to Hvar Town.

From Mostar you can drive back to the coast via possible sightseeing detours at Kravice Waterfalls, Pocitelj and Medugorje.

Recommended places to stay

Morning sightseeing in Hvar Town (we recommend a walk up to the castle before it gets too hot), then take an afternoon or early evening ferry to Split from the port of Stari Grad. Possible excursions from Hvar Town include the Pakleni Islands, the Blue Cave and a "Food & Wine Tour".

Once back on the mainland you can choose to travel on to nearby Trogir or you could stay in the centre of Split itself.

A free day to explore Trogir or visit nearby places of interest such as the Roman ruins of Salona, the Kliss Fortress or return to Split (it is possible to visit Split using the local passenger ferry across the bay). Perhaps you may also be interested to do some rafting or ride the zip wire in the Cetina Valley near Omis.

Drive directly inland along scenic route no.1, passing the historic towns of Sinj and Knin to arrive at the World-famous Plitvice Lakes National Park. You may also consider a detour into Bosnia & Herzegovina to visit the Una Valley Nature Park near Bihac.

A full day to explore the national park using the transport options included in your entry ticket together with some walking around the impressive natural wonders. We recommend pre-booking your tickets to ensure entry at a time of your choosing; these can be included as part of your holiday itinerary.

Drive down to the coast via a choice of routes, such as Otocac, Senj & Paklenica or Gospic & Paklenica or maybe Gracac & Pag Island. Explore Zadar old town for dinner on arrival, visiting the fascinating Sea Organ and the ingenious "Greeting to the Sun" at the Riva.

More time in Zadar if required, including the nearby seaside town of Nin. Then drive down the new highway and/or coast road all the way to Dubrovnik. We suggest breaking your journey at Makarska, Omis or Gradac and maybe doing some rafting or the zip-wire experience in the Cetina Valley if your schedule allows an extra night. Drop off car in Dubrovnik (we will collect it from your hotel).

A full day to explore the old town on foot, by bus and cable car including its nearby beaches and countryside; visit independently or with a choice of pre-booked excursions and activities.

Optional Guided Tour: Dubrovnik Panorama & Sightseeing "... those who seek paradise on Earth should come to Dubrovnik" (George Bernard Shaw). This tour will reveal the finest sites of the old walled City as well as give you an opportunity to view it from above. Our guide will lead you through the narrow streets of the Old Town introducing you to the history and culture of this magnificent city.

Private transfer to Dubrovnik airport for your flight home.
