About Croatia Self Drive 01 - Venetian Connections
A grand drive along Croatia's coast from Dubrovnik in the south to Istria in the north (plus Venice) - includes locations with magnificent history, beautiful islands & national parks.
Activity code: CRFD01
Duration: 15 Days
START - Dubronvik / FINISH - Venice (or Pula)
Why not rediscover Croatia's past with non-stop beautiful scenery and combine this with a romantic mini-break in Venice ? This fly drive itinerary is our recommended route for a journey along the length of the Adriatic coast; taking approximately 2 weeks. Starting in the World-famous historic town of Dubrovnik you will be able to discover the fabulous islands and small resorts in the south such as Korcula (which claims Marco Polo as its own), Hvar and Makarska.
Travelling in Croatia is an absolute joy whether you choose to island hop, drive the incredible coast road or use the modern highways to get quickly between main locations. The mid-point of the holiday is the city of Split but you may choose to stay in smaller Trogir across the bay; from here we recommend a visit to the Krka national park and a stop in one of our favourite places, Zadar. From Zadar you can choose to head inland if you wish to visit the stunning Plitvice Lakes national park or simply stay on the wonderfully scenic coastal road all the way to Istria.
Once in Istria you can spend a few days exploring its unique historic locations, Pula, Rovinj, Porec, etc. and its fantastic countryside, perhaps a night or two in our recommended hilltop town of Motovun. Then, if you have the time, we are able to book you on the ferry to Venice and a few nights in a small hotel right in the centre of the city, just a short walk from St. Marks Square. There are many flights from Venice's Marco Polo Airport so we can match up a return flight with your arrival into Dubrovnik for you.
As with all our holidays we are able to tailor-make the itinerary to suit your requirements for any or all of the following - departure airport, dates of travel and duration, type of hotel, size of vehicle, overall budget and any pre-booked activities.
Accommodation: the hotels in this itinerary are generally small, independent or family-run, properties which add significantly to your travel experience in these fascinating countries (in the list below we have included our main recommendations together with suggestions for "boutique" hotels and deluxe options, please do not hesitate to request alternative hotels).
Transport: To take the stress out of arriving and departing we offer a private airport (or port) transfer service, we can then deliver and collect your hire car from your hotel at no extra cost. All our vehicles have a/c and come with a full tank of fuel, we provide driving directions and parking information for all accommodation (where relevant). The new highways linking Zagreb, Split, Pula and Dubrovnik will cut down journey times when you wish to get from A to B quickly but this also means that the other roads will be quieter and a pleasant alternative for sightseeing and travelling at a gentler pace. (NB. tolls apply on the highways).
Extra Information: all our holidays have a recommended route with suggestions for sightseeing and we include the most up-to-date ferry schedules and tariffs; we are also able to book activities and specialist sightseeing, particularly in Dubrovnik - such as cycling, sea kayaking, wine-tasting, etc.
NB: Flights available with a range of airlines, from various UK airports. All holidays which include flights booked through us include ATOL cover.

Arrive in Dubrovnik; private transfer to your hotel.
Sightseeing in Dubrovnik on foot and by public transport (bus, cable car).
We will deliver hire car directly to your hotel; leaving Dubrovnik drive north via a visit to the wonderful castle walls at Ston and then we recommend travelling along the Peljesac Peninsula to Orebic from where you can get the short ferry crossing to Korcula Town.
** Alternative Day 3 - visit Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina after Ston and stay in the centre of old town **
From Korcula take the ferry quickly back to Orebic and then a short drive for another ferry over to Ploce (thereby avoiding retracing your steps down the peninsula). From Ploce head along the coast road with suggested visits to Gradac and the Zaostrog Monastery before another quick ferry across to the eastern tip of Hvar Island at Drvenik. Once across drive along the stunning road which traces the spine of the island, passing the capital, Stari Grad, all the way to the west coast and to Hvar Town.
Next day enjoy a full day in Hvar Town to relax and explore the old town and its castle.
Take the ferry from Stari Grad back to the mainland at Split; at this point you can choose to visit Split and then travel on to nearby Trogir or you could stay in Split.
Next day you can choose to visit Trogir or Split with an optional visit to Roman Salona or Ciovo Island.
Continue by driving up the coast once again, this time passing Primosten and Sibenik en route to Zadar. You will have time to visit historic Sibenik or you will also pass close to the National Park of Krka which is well worth a minor detour (near Skradin).
Drive inland from Zadar on a choice of routes to Plitvice Lakes National Park. Along the way why not makes a small detour to the village of Nin or even Pag island with its unique "moonscape" (the latter is accessible by bridge).
You now have a full day to explore the national park using the transport options included in your entry ticket together with some walking around the impressive natural specatcle.
Drive from Plitvice back to the coast our recommended route is either via Rijeka and Opatija or inland via the small hilltop town of Motovun to the resort of Pula on the southern tip of the peninsula.
Your last full day in Croatia can be used to explore sights in Pula such as its amphitheatre and many churches but you may also wish to see other fascinating places such as Rovinj. Drop off car at end of day.
Depart Croatia on the morning fast ferry from Pula to Venice. We will arrange a transfer on arrival to your hotel.
A full day to explore Venice on foot and on public transport (water bus, gondola).
Departure transfer to Venice Marco Polo Airport, across the lagoon.

"Wow what an amazing holiday. Great service everywhere and everyone very helpful Excited to get an upgraded vehicle to boot. No issues at all. Maybe could have known that the resort in the National Park took only cash and wanted Euros in particular. The food was really outstanding in all places and the tiny room in Trogir was quite acceptable as the weather was fantastic. Thank you Andy for such excellent service around all of your detailed work before and your help with the Croatia Air missed flight due to weather. The transfer men were lovely and helpful."

"Overall, it was a great holiday. Lovely people, lovely food, lovely weather, lovely clear sea and it felt very safe - so safe that many times people just left their cars running for about 20 mins while they went into a shop or building - we would never dare do that here! Thank you for all your help in the booking etc, we would definitely recommend you to anyone else."

"Just a quick note to say what a fabulous time we had in Croatia. The hotels chosen where fabulous particularly Hotel Lero in Dubrovnik, Hotel Korsal in Korcula, Hotel Mediterran in Zadar and Hotel Degenya in Plitvice (the pool had only been opened 10 days). The days we were driving where really easy and the best route form Korcula to Split is definately better by ferry. I understand that the border crossings with Bosnia can be a pain and lengthy at times. Got to see all my Games of Thrones sites apart from the Aborteum just outside Dubrovnik - think we missed the signs. There was only one error and that was the Hotel Edens fault - they did not have a twin room for the kids - they were fully booked, so could not change. But other than that no problems. "

"We took a number of lovely detours during the drives, and particularly loved Podgora and Gradac on the coast. We were very happy with Andy at Rediscover the World, who was extremely informative and efficient. He made the transition from destination to destination smooth and trouble free."

"Thank you Andy & Dawn, your help and service were outstanding and I would use you again and certainly recommend you to anybody. We enjoyed Croatia although we found the food a bit repetitive after a while; the people were friendly and everywhere spotlessly clean and everyone so helpful."

"We had a great holiday. Transfers and accommodation were excellent and it was mainly trouble-free. The only issues we had were: - Dropping the hire car off at Rovinj Port. The drop off time was 7am but our Catamaran to Venice left at 7am so we had to arrange a suitable drop off location and time with Last Minute Car Rentals. They were not keen on meeting us at 6am so we had to leave the car in the port car park, with the keys hidden somewhere. However we did receive a text later that day to say the car had been collected and all was OK, but I was not initially keen to leave the car and not complete a handover. I did take photos of the car when I initially collected it and when I dropped it off in case there were issues over damage. - We had issues with parking the car at a couple of the hotels due to a lack of spaces, however the hotels were very accommodating and found us somewhere to park. There was usually an extra charge for parking which we were not aware of before we started the holiday. For future reference it may be useful to inform hotels when booking that a car space is required and advise customers of the additional cost. Also, we had to pay a tourist tax in Venice (4.50 Euros per person per day I think) so it may be worth advising customers of this (unless you do already and I missed it!!) Apart from the above everything else was excellent. The paperwork and information we received from you was spot-on. Flights and transfers were trouble-free and the hotels were all clean and the staff friendly and very helpful. We would like to thank you for organising thee holiday for us, we would certainly recommend you to family and friends and will look to book through you in the future. Many thanks again."
