About Croatia Self Drive 06 - Classic Croatia
Croatia's "best bits" - visit the capital city, Adriatic coast & its islands plus some incredible national parks. Designed as a linear route so you can reverse the direction if you wish.
Activity code: CRFD06
Duration: 15 days
START - Zagreb / FINISH - Dubrovnik.
This fly drive itinerary is our most popular itinerary offering a recommended holiday of 2 weeks in Croatia. Starting in the Capital, Zagreb, it includes national parks, historic towns, beautiful islands and much more. The itinerary concludes in Dubrovnik but can easily be reversed with the flexible flight schedule now available.
The holiday begins with a smooth transfer service to your hotel in Zagreb where you have a couple of days to visit the city on foot and using its excellent public transport. Your hire car will be delivered to you and you can head straight out into the countryside in the direction of your first major stop, the stunning Plitvice Lakes National Park. Each day's drive is not so far so you have plenty of time to do some sightseeing, walking or take an extended lunch / picnic along the way. Your first sight of the coast comes at the lovely old town of Zadar which also has some innovative new sights up its sleeve. Travelling along the coast you can visit another national park, Krka, which is similar to Plitvice en route to your next main stop, either Trogir or Split (you can choose either according to your preference and in the main season it is easy to travel between on the local ferry across the bay). Time to relax or perhaps take up the offer to do some rafting or the mulit-zip-wire experience in the Cetina Valley.
For the second week of the trip you could give up the car and travel on the catamaran service to Dubrovnik via an island (or two) of your choice but sticking with the self-drive we recommend staying in Hvar Town for a couple of nights and then traversing the island to get the ferry over to the mainland (thereby avoiding backtracking to Split). Once back on the mainland you can stay in Ston and sample oysters and walk the walls or consider travelling inland to Mostar in Bosnia & Herzegovina prior to arriving in Dubrovnik. Mostar may be a day trip destination for many holidaying in Croatia but its stunning bridge, which was lovingly reconstructed after the war in the 1990s, and the old town's atmosphere is well worth the overnight stay.
If you have a few extra days or wish to cut down the locations along the way you may wish to consider a few days in Montenegro which can be tailored to your preference between the beach resort of Budva with its tranquil old town and Kotor with its impressive walls, historic buildings and challenging walk up the "staircase" to the fortress high above.
We feel that the best finale to this holiday is a few nights in Dubrovnik where you can relax, enjoy some activities and sightseeing without your car as the local buses and cable car offer an excellent service.
We are able to tailor-make this holiday to suit your requirements for any or all of the following - departure airport, budget, hotel type/size, overall duration, pre-booked activities, etc.

"Plitvice Lakes was by far the highlight of the holiday, followed by Dubrovnik, but the whole 2 weeks was very enjoyable (even getting soaked at the Paklenika NP and having to dry off and change in the car park)."

"All went very smoothly. A beautiful country to visit and its people are very helpful and friendly. The notes provided by Andy were very informative. We took our own satnav and I think we would have struggled without it. Enjoyed all the hotels and the staff were all very friendly and helpful but particularly liked the hotels in Trogir and Hvar. Both of us were very happy with this holiday experience."

"Compliments are given to the amount of information given prior to departure regarding possible places of interest; also the GPS directions were an excellent bonus. In conclusion, thanks to all for the first class attention, organisation and professionalism."

"We've done road trips round other countries before but this one seemed just a little bit more luxurious. We very much appreciated the taxi transfers from the airport being organised for us already. Likewise, it was fantastic to have the hire care delivered to us and picked up afterwards. These two manoeuvres have caused a lot of hassle in the past. This kind of holiday can be exhausting enough as it is. I also liked that the rooms had been so carefully chosen. It seemed like you'd had a look round the hotels already and requested specific rooms. Obviously, these rooms weren't the cheapest the hotels had to offer, and that's not what we normally book. The hotels were all really easy to find and had good locations, except one we had trouble with. The Korkyra Apartments on Korcula took us till midnight to reach, after catching the last ferry. If we'd come from the short ferry from Orebic, round the corner, it would have been brilliant. But we were coming from Vela Luka and our satnat took us down a pedestrianised road in Korcula town. Otherwise, everything was brilliant and the whole itinerary went according to plan 99% of the time. Even the plans I made for day trips went smoothly. We felt very lucky the whole time. I think Croatia is a country that is really geared up to tourism. They do everything full on, one hundred percent, so everything is as easy as possible for visitors. We hardly had to queue for anything in Plitvice Lakes even though they have 1.3 million visitors per year there."

"We had a great holiday and could not fault the organisation and location of accommodation that was specifically tailored to our requests. If there was a category for 'very good' we would have selected it! We particularly appreciated the advice on alternative driving routes, we always chose the 'scenic' route and were never disappointed! We would have just liked a little more info on practicalities such as some hotels not having lifts, or safes, Hotel Perla being in a pedestrianised area & therefore having to do several journeys to unload the car (as it was our final stop). We were also unaware how early you need to turn up for the ferry from Spit to Korchula - we took the booking clerks advice and turned up 2hrs early for the 10.15 ferry but still didn't get on and had to spend another day in Split (which we had already visited) waiting for the 5.30pm ferry. I appreciate that this is only an issue during August but other people clearly knew because they were there super early! All other arrangements worked very well and we organised our own trips to Plitvice, Krka and Miljet. We found everybody to be very friendly and helpful, everyone spoke english! the food was good and the roads were a pleasure to drive. We hope to return soon!"

"This was the first time we did a driving holiday in a country in Europe. The information we received from the agent about travel times was exact. We got a brand new car for our 8-day drive through beautiful Croatia, which we truly appreciated. The choice of hotels was excellent and well located in each of the cities we visited. We were in Croatia during the Euros and had a great time watching and rooting for team Croatia in front of large television screens set up just about everywhere. Our trip to Croatia was truly memorable."
