The Al Maaden Golf Course, Marrakech
Designer - American architect Kyle Philips. Par 72 - 18 holes - 6429 m Opened – 2010
Situated a little out of Marrakech, this course has incredible views to the High Atlas Mountains. Key features include strategically placed, cavernous bunkers, angular water hazards, undulating fairways and elevated greens. The architect, Kyle Philips, has used the varied terrain with its indigenous palm, cypress and almond trees and bushes to create a course that is a challenge but one that can be enjoyed by all abilities. Al Maaden has not been created with the aim of becoming an international tournament venue, instead its aim is to be enjoyed by generations of golfers for years to come.
Combining a love of nature and technical fantasy, the Al Maaden course has a double originality because it is also lined by villas and decorated with geometric bodies of water. This golf course is a Moroccan oasis with a touch of Scottish links. The hilly fairways are embellished with 104 strategically placed bunkers and uniquely Al Maaden Golf has mirror lakes which reflect the sunlight and beauty of its Moroccan gardens.
Amelkis Golf Club, Marrakech
Designer – Cabel B Robinson. Par 72 - 27 holes - 6657 m Opened – 1995
Just outside the southern edge of Marrakech the Amelkis Golf Club sits under the gaze of the often snow-tipped Atlas mountains. The Amelkis has established itself as a must play whilst golfing in Marrakech. The fairways are wide and undulating and lined with century-old palm trees and giant papyrus reeds, many well-placed bunkers and water features make this course a real test of golf (there are some long par 3s with larger red-earth bunkers and the back nine is dominated by some particularly tricky water hazards).
The course designer, Cabell Robinson, gained his skills under the tutelage of Robert Trent Jones and wanted to give players a difficult and very technical course. He has succeeded with a spectacular offering; hilly, bumpy, blind departures, hazards at each hole, a sublime path strewn with pitfalls and huge bunkers defending each green.
This magnificent 18 hole course was designed by Cabell Robinson. Its challenging American-style holes will enthrall even the most demanding golfer with its bunkers, water hazards and exotic rough. The course's wide, undulating fairways running through the Khettarus, 11th century irrigation channels built by the Almoravides.
Palmeraie Golf Club, Marrakech
Designer – Robert Trent Jones. Par 72 - 27 holes - 6214 m Opened – 1992 (extra 9 holes added in 2009)
The Palmeraie Golf Club is set in 77 hectares of mostly flat terrain at the northern entrance to Marrakech, just above the historical bridge spanning the Oued Tensift river, and has some exceptional views of the almost year-round, snow-capped Atlas Mountains. There is also a stark contrast between the oasis of lush greens, palm trees and lakes of the golf course with the neighbouring desert that stretches away into the distance. The course is formulated around 11 large lakes, has narrow, pristine fairways, many tricky, undulating greens and some strategically placed bunkers. We think this makes the Palmeraie one of the finest courses in Morocco in all seasons. Voted Best Golf Resort in Africa since 2006.
The best varieties of grass have been imported from the USA to create the optimum conditions for golfers at all times of year. The greens, made in accordance with the specifications of the USAG were made of Bermuda grass grown in the USA at the same latitude.
The Palmeraie has always been a very welcoming place to play as well as somewhere to relax and enjoy some down-time in the superb, deluxe Moorish-style club house and restaurant(s), located in the very heart of the links.
Samanah Golf & Country Club, Marrakech
Designer – Nicklaus Design. Par 72 - 18 holes - 6800 m Opened – 2009
Samanah Golf & Country Club is one of the newest courses in Marrakech, situated around eight miles from Marrakech near the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. Designed by the Nicklaus Design company this “desert style” course is likely to become a favourite of golfers travelling to Marrakech (the course also boasts a David Leadbetter golf academy). The length of the fairways, the many obstacles and light winds in the region require golfers to think carefully on all shots.
A true challenge - key characteristics include large bunkers requiring accuracy from the tee (typical Nicklaus “risk-reward” shots), often combined with water hazards and wide rolling fairways leading to huge well protected greens. The course has been built to USGA standards, which ensures a high standard of conditioning year round.
ECO-PROFILE: Samanah has installed a modern watering system which uses minimal water by measuring the exact amount required by the vegetation, while a special variety of grass has been used here that is suitable for the Moroccan climate, needing less water and making it an ecologically sound resort.
The clubhouse is a very welcoming place to relax after your round, and reflects the grandeur of the course with architecture inspired by the historic city walls of Marrakech. The interior features fountains, beautiful Moroccan mosaics and wood carvings and boasts an impressive bar, restaurant, lounge, pro-shop and well-equipped changing rooms for men and women. There's also a large terrace overlooking the sweeping fairways and distant snow capped mountains.
Royal Golf Club, Marrakech
Designer – Gustave Gollias & Bouchaïb Stitou (& Arnaud Massy) Par 72 - 18 holes - 5937 m Opened – 1923
Opened in 1923 by the Pasha of Marrakech (subsequently reworked by Open Champion Arnaud Massy in 1933), the Royal Golf de Marrakech is the oldest golf club in Morocco and was reportedly one of His Majesty King Hassan ll's favourite courses. It is situated at the foot of the snow-covered Atlas mountains and is lined by a variety of cypress, eucalyptus, palm, olive, orange and apricot trees.
There is a real British style to the course with strategically placed bunkers protecting its greens and fairways lined with tall trees [ficus, cypress, eucalyptus, olive, cork-oak, date palm, banana, orange and apricot] ensuring that a fair but challenging test is assured. Follow in the footsteps of Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George and Ike Eisenhower to discover the magic of this legendary golf course, a real garden of discovery. Easily reached from the city centre, Royal Marrakech comes highly recommended. The course is easily walkable at 5900 metres with nice flat terrain.
The course is fairly narrow and winds through undulating fairways bordered by [wickedly] fast greens of Bermuda and Pencross grass. The 15th hole will challenge the best with the greens strategically hidden behind mounds separated by bunkers with projecting palm trees.
