A Reykjavik city break is the ideal introduction to this fascinating country. You will be impressed by how close the most popular attractions are to the city.

Reykjavík is Iceland’s largest city and the most northerly capital in the world. With around four hours of daylight on a winter's day, it is an atmospheric city, whilst in summer with almost 24 hours of daylight it is a lively, bustling place. It is a great place to visit, whatever the season.

You can witness the natural wonders of Iceland, pure thermal energy generated deep from beneath the earth; marvel at beautiful landscapes or enjoy lively culture and fun-filled nightlife. Perhaps you just fancy relaxing, breathing in pure, clean air and recharging your batteries.

This short break gives you an extra day and you have a choice of fantastic optional excursions to help you make the most of your time in Iceland.

Itinerary

  • Day One - arrival

    Transfer from Keflavik airport to hotel in Reykjavik (included). Time to explore the city at your leisure.

  • Day Two - Free time in Reykjavik - Optional Tour : Blue Lagoon (not included)

    Reykjavik offers a wide range of sights to visit and lots of activities. Spend the morning exploring the capital of Iceland with its number of sights, museums, shopping possibilities, restaurants and cafés.

    In the afternoon you can enjoy one of Iceland´s most popular sights - the Blue Lagoon - for a relaxing swim in its geothermal waters. The Blue Lagoon's warm water and natural active ingredients: mineral salts, silica and blue green algae help you relax and unwind while the Blue Lagoon white silica mud gently cleanses and exfoliates the skin. The mineral salts balance and relax body and soul. The Blue Lagoon Express offers the ideal way to visit the Blue Lagoon so this means that you can take your time and spend as long as you wish there - return times are always flexible.  For a unique experience indulge yourself with an outdoor massage or one of the spa treatments available there (pre-booking is recommended).

  • Day Three - Golden Circle day trip (included)

    This day trip is an absolute must while you here for the sheer breathtaking scenery and unique landscape. You can walk around the world-famous Geysir geothermal area, a geothermal field where hot springs are in abundance, geysers explode and pools of mud bubble. You also stop by the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall and visit Thinghvellir National Park, a historic area where the Icelandic Parliament was held for several centuries. It is also consider one of the geological wonders of the world, at Thingvellir you can see the effects of the tectonic plate movements which have opened various cracks and fissures in the earth’s crust, and it was here that the Icelandic Parliament was founded in the 10th century.

  • Day Four - at leisure or a choice of optional excursions

    Today you have the possibility to choose between one of the following best-selling optional day tours.

    South Shore Adventure
    This tour is ideal for nature lovers of all kinds. You will have an opportunity to stand behind the plummeting Seljalandsfoss waterfall, walk up to the Skógarfoss waterfall and gaze at the formations. Travel along the south coast of Iceland as far as Vík í Mýrdal a small charming village surrounded by beautiful high cliffs, popular with nesting birds.
    Duration approximately: 10 hours.
     
    Glacier Walk
    You will be guided through the labyrinth of a glacier tongue extending down from the fourth biggest glacier in Iceland. Only two hours from Reykjavík you find the Eyjafjallajökull massif, and just a little further east the Sólheimajökull glacier tongue extends down from its mother glacier, Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland’s fourth largest. This is a safe and easy glacier walk on crampons up on to the ice field where a wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses await your discovery. An Iceland glacier walk is a great way to experience nature and the Sólheimajökull glacier is an ideal place to spend the day.  Your experienced mountain guides will teach you how to use the basic ice equipment necessary for this tour. On the way back there’s a stop at the picturesque waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

    Duration approximately :9 - 10 hours total, 3 - 3h30 on the ice.
     
    Historical Tour of the Westman Islands
    This tour takes you from Reykjavík to the volcano island of Heimaey in the Westman Islands archipelago.
    In Heimaey you’ll be taken on a guided coach tour of the island, where you will get in touch with a volcanic crater, still warm lava and half-buried houses from the island’s infamous 1973 volcanic eruption. You will spot some of the most interesting features of the island, where nature has sculpted a fascinating landscape teeming with diverse birdlife and animal life, including the world´s largest puffin colony.

    Optional boat tour around the island
    The boat circles the island of Heimaey, stopping briefly at places of interest where passengers can see various caves, witness the birdlife, and are likely to see some whales. The trip ends by sailing into Klettshellir (Cliff Cave). A musical instrument is played to showcase the cave’s stunning acoustics, creating a sensational experience. From there we re-enter the harbour.

    The boat tour (optional) is only available during summer* and takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. If you choose not to go on the boat tour or it’s out of season, you will have some free time to expore the island. Your guide will tell you about interesting areas to visit and meet up with you afterwards.
     

    Whale Watching Tour from Reykjavik
    Experience an exciting whale-watching tour and catch sight of whales, dolphins, porpoises and seabirds in their natural habitat.  Most common sightings are Minke whales, White-Beaked Dolphins, Harbour Porpoises and occasionally the great Humpback whale. Many sea birds can be seen as well.

  • Day Five: departure

    Transfer to Keflavik Airport  for return flight (included).
