About Norway Self Drive 4 - Tromsø and the Lofoten Islands

Summary

Explore Tromso, 'Gateway to the Arctic', before enjoying some of the most stunning scenery in the country on the Lofoten Islands.

Activity code: 1117-HKK/DK

Duration: 5 days

Tromso has a wealth of museums focusing on regional art and Sami culture - why not take the cable car up the mountain for the most magnificent views over the city.

The Lofoten Islands offer some of the most breath-taking scenery in the country. Here the towering, pointed mountain peaks rise majestically from the sea to a height of almost 1000 metres; many of the island interiors are swathed in emerald green, and the shorelines are fringed with white sandy beaches. We recommend a visit to some of the charming villages, for instance Stamsund and Reine. Finish your trip in Narvik, a strategically important place during the Second World War.

Itinerary

  • Day One: Arrival Tromso

Arrive into Tromso Airport, pick up your rental car and drive to the centre of the town. A chance to explore Tromsø, the principal city of northern Norway and known as the Gateway to the Arctic because of the significance in Norwegian commercial history. There are plenty of museums focusing on regional art, Sami culture and history, as well as polar science. We recommend a short trip by cable car to Storsteinen Mountain, where you can enjoy the view of Tromsø and surroundings. Also worth a visit is the magnificent Arctic Cathedral, a masterpiece of modern architecture.

Accommodation at a centrally located 3* hotel in Tromsø.

  • Day Two: Tromso – Vesteralen Islands - Harstad (305 km)

After breakfast at the hotel take the route along the shores of the Bals Fjord and road E6 to the Vesterålen Islands. It's also possible to take a smaller road along the shores of the Asta Fjord. Arrive at Harstad, capital of the Vesterålen Islands and a good base for exploring the archipelago. As well as being surrounded by nature the city offers a wide range of cultural events like the North Norwegian Festival of Culture in June.

Accommodation at a centrally located 3* hotel in Harstad.

  • Day Three: Harstad – Lofoten Islands - Svolvaer (205 km)

Enjoy your breakfast at the hotel before your exploration of the Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands. On the Vesterålen Islands you can simply enjoy nature or participate in one of the several local festivals. Drive to Sortland and continue by ferry from Melbu to Fiskebøl to arrive on the Lofoten Islands. The Lofoten Islands offer some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country.

Accommodation at a centrally located 3* hotel on the islands.

  • Day Four: Svolvaer – Skutvik - Narvik (140 km)

Breakfast at the hotel and the possibility to explore more of the Lofoten Islands, before leaving for the mainland. From June to August take a ferry from Svolvær to Skutvik, crossing the West Fjord (Vestfjorden). In May and September- October, take a ferry from Lødingen to Bognes. All months: Continue by car to Bognes for another ferry crossing on the Lys Fjord to Skarberget. The Lys Fjord is the home of a big colony of killer whales while sea eagles rule Skarberget, a mountain which plunges
directly into the sea, so with a little bit of luck this short cruise will show you a unique part of Norwegian nature. Drive to Narvik, which is situated on a peninsula between the Beis Fjord and the Rombak Fjord, at the bottom of the 1200 metre high Fagernes Mountain. We recommend the cable car up the mountain or a visit to the Ofoten Museum. Furthermore the region has a varied collection of 2nd World War memorials and museums.

Accommodation at a centrally located 3* hotel in Narvik.

  • Day Five: Narvik – Tromso (255 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Drop off rental car at Tromso Airport before your flight home.
