Duration: 8 Days

Mount Pelion is a harmonious mix of myth, history and incredible natural beauty. In Greek mythology, Mount Pelion (which took its name from the mythical king Pyleus, father of Achilles) was the playground of the gods of Mount Olympus and home to Chiron the Centaur, tutor of many ancient Greek heroes such as Jason, Achilles, Theseus and Hercules.

Still relatively unspoilt, Pelion is an outstandingly beautiful area of the Greek mainland; sandy beaches and crystal clear blue waters combine with dense forests and traditional villages to offer a holiday experience to suit everyone. Pelion is known for its traditional mountain villages with their stone built mansions set among leafy village squares, each village retaining its own authenticity and character. Most of them provide breathtaking views towards the sea and are the perfect place for peace & solitude.

Several villages are most definitely worth visiting:

  • Makrinitsa has been characterised as the village of the "nobles", due to the large number of mansions found in the village. It is also referred to as the"Balcony of Pelion", due to the breathtaking views of Volos from the village square spreading out 600m below. There is an excellent taverna here which serves good quality food including local dishes of spetsofai, fasolada (bean soup) and giouvetsi (beef with pasta baked in the oven).
  • Tsagarades is located on the north-eastern side of the mountain at a height of 500m. From here you can enjoy glorious views of the Aegean. The village was developed around the four churches of Taxiarches, Agia Paraskevi, Agia Kyriaki and Agios Stefanos and the four suburbs of the village still keep these names. It is worth visiting the square of Agia Paraskvi, where you can see the one-thousand year old plane tree with its 14 metre diameter trunk, and enjoy fabulous walnut cake at the village square.
  • Vizitsa is one of the most beautiful villages on the whole mountain. A great number of 18th and 19th century Peliot mansions can be found in this village, many of which have been restored under the supervision of the Greek National Tourist Organisation.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora is a historic complex of lofty monasteries perched at the top of the unusually sculpted sandstone cliffs and one of the most spectacular, amazing and sacred sites to see on earth.

This walking holiday is available as part of a Small Group or Private Journey. The itinerary includes the World-famous monasteries at Meteora which is a fabulous introduction to the region with some great hiking. Once in Pelion our guide will take you along traditional stone paths from the sea to the hills and back again taking in some of the most beautiful villages, tiny resorts and spectacular views on the peninsula. Our guides are officially qualified Mountain Guides and have many years of experience. Overall this is a hiking and food lover's dream and has something for everyone.
