About Family Activity Holiday
A three centre holiday in Slovenia's fascinating countryside - ideal for active families - rivers, caves, lakes, mountain passes & great food.
Activity code: SLFD04
Duration: 10 Days / Nights
START / FINISH - Ljubljana
This itinerary is our suggested fly-drive holiday for an active family holiday in Slovenia. Starting with a short drive from the airport to either Lake Bled or the Loggar Valley the holiday includes national parks, historic towns, stunning river valleys, mountain passes and much more. This is designed as a circuit from Ljubljana (airport) so you can travel out via Lake Bled and back directly from Postojna or vice versa. It is easily extended by adding nights in some or all locations or, of course, an extra location such as Ljubljana or the coast.
This holiday has a tried and trusted recommended route with our personal suggestions for sightseeing included with your final travel documents but you are free to explore or relax as much as you like within the overall structure of the itinerary. Driving conditions are excellent with the new highway* from the capital to the coast cutting down on travel times but also freeing up space on minor roads so drivers can choose between peaceful scenic routes or speedier alternatives to make the most of time away from home.
* our hire cars include Slovenia's Vignette (highway tax disc) & cross-border Green Card for Croatia, Italy & Austria.
Begin your holiday with some beautiful scenery en route to the Loggar Valley, a region full of opportunities for active sightseeing and adventure. After your time in the more remote area it is time to visit Lake Bled and the Triglav National Park (choosing to stay in Bled, Bohinj or Kranjska Gora to make the most of the outdoor activities and plentiful fresh air on offer). Then drive across the incredible Vrsic Pass to your next location, Bovec in the Soca Valley; en route back to the airport you can stop in Postojna to visit its fabulous caves before taking your flight home or considering a few extra days at the coast or in the capital.
We can tailor-make a holiday to suit your requirements for any or all of the following - departure airport, budget, hotel type/size, overall duration, activities, etc.
Accommodation: the hotels in this fly-drive itinerary are generally small, independent or family-run, properties which add significantly to your travel experience in this fascinating country (in the list below we have included our recommended hotels plus suggestions for upgrades to "boutique" hotels and deluxe properties, please do not hesitate to request alternative hotels).
Transport: to take the stress out of arriving and departing we offer a private airport transfer service; we can deliver and collect your hire car from your hotel at no extra cost. All our vehicles have a/c and come with a full tank of fuel, we provide driving directions and parking information for all accommodation.
Extra Information: all our holidays have a recommended route with suggestions for sightseeing; we can also book activities and specialist sightseeing - such as cycling, sea kayaking, rafting and hiking guides, etc.
NB: Flights available to book through us with a range of airlines, from various UK airports.
Pick up hire car at the airport and drive east and then north to the isolated Logar Valley near the Austrian border with plenty of time to explore this beautiful, lesser-visited area. Possible detours en route include the small town of Kamnik and the Velika Planina.
Suggested detour en route to the Velika Planina, a great summer pasture in the heart of the mountain plateau where, near the cable car station there is a herdsmen's settlement at which you can experience a little of their traditional way of life, taste their dairy products. If you have time this is a great opportunity to get some fresh air and a walk, with or without using the cable car.
We recommend a walk up to the Rinka Waterfall at the top of the valley, a scenic drive on the Panoramic road where you can indulge in high quality local products from the farms along the route and a visit to nearby Solcava for the new visitor centre and local crafts workshops. Also in the area is an excellent archery centre, a fairytale forest for the younger children and the opportunity to do some paragliding, mountain biking, climbing and horse-riding. There is even a location where you can cycle underground in a former mine which is quite unique.
More time in Logar Valley and then onward via the stunning "short-cut" through Austria and back down to Preddvor and then the lovely town of Kranj en route to Lake Bled.
Two full days to explore the lake, including the island by Pletna Boat and the castle; you can walk or cycle around the full shoreline of the lake and explore further on trails in and around the Triglav National Park. On the shore of the lake there is a summer toboggan run, a zip line, mini-golf and nearby is Lake Bohinj where there are lots more activity options such as kayaking and mini-rafting and a ranch for horse riding across the open meadows. Just a short drive up the lake shore is the Vogel cable car which can whisk you up much higher to enjoy some truly alpine hiking. If you fancied a less intense walk then a short drive (or cycle) to the north of Bled is the Vintgar Gorge.
NB. you could choose to extend your stay in Lake Bled to explore the area more fully or even to take a day trip into the mountains by train - there is a station very close to the Hotel Triglav from which you can catch a train in the morning to Most na Soci (or stations down the line to Nova Gorica) and return in the late afternoon.
A Full day to travel over the famous Vrsic Pass (with more than 50 switch-backs which are numbered from the north side) and then down the western side of the Triglav National Park along the Soca Valley to Bovec.
From Bovec there are many hiking and cycling trails (including the Soca Trail and Boka Waterfall) plus the cable car to the ski area which is now linked up to the Italian side offers more high altitude hiking opportunities. More adventurous activities include canyoning, kayaking, paragliding and caving.
When leaving Bovec you could head straight for the airport but we'd recommend a stop at the World-famous site of Postojna. By staying a night you give your self time to explore the area which has so much more to offer in addition to the caves such as Predjama Castle and the Modrijan Homestead.
* Visit the show caves first thing in the morning (they are just a short walk from both hotels and tickets can be purchased online) and then you have time to enjoy the general surroundings away from the main crowds and / or head along the highway to Ljubljana Airport for your flight home.
** If you don't have an extra night but still wish to visit Postojna then you can shave one of the nights off one of the three main locations to make up.
