About Slovenia Self Drive no.1

Summary

A tour of Slovenia's highlights including the capital (Ljubljana), incredible caves, mountain lakes, historic towns and a beautiful coastline.

Activity code: SLFD01

Duration: 8 Days

START / FINISH - Ljubljana

This itinerary is our suggested fly-drive holiday for a week long tour of Slovenia. Starting in the capital, Ljubljana, the route includes National Parks, historic towns, beautiful islands and much more. This is designed as a circuit from Ljubljana so you can travel out via Lake Bled and back directly from the coast or vice versa. It is easily extended by adding nights in some or all locations or, of course, introducing new places such as the Logar Valley, Bovec or the Goriska Brda wine region in the west.

This holiday has a tried and trusted recommended route with our personal suggestions for sightseeing included with your final travel documents but you are free to explore or relax as much as you like within the overall structure of the itinerary. Driving conditions are excellent with the new highway* from the capital to the coast cutting down on travel times but also freeing up space on minor roads so drivers can choose between peaceful scenic routes or speedier alternatives to make the most of time away from home.

* our hire cars include Slovenia's Vignette (or highway tax disc).

Begin your holiday with some relaxing sightseeing in Ljubljana, a city which is a delight to wander around both daytime and evening; it is compact and very friendly with some excellent viewpoints and historic architecture. After the capital it is only a short drive north to the stunning Lake Bled and the Triglav National Park, you can choose to stay in either or both of Bled and Kranjska Gora to make the most of the outdoor activities and plentiful fresh air on offer. En route to your next location, Postojna and its fabulous caves you have a full day to meander through the mountain villages on the smaller roads, maybe pack a picnic. The final destination is Isola (or Piran) on Slovenia's small but beautiful Adriatic shoreline. From here you are ideally placed for a short trip into Croatia (e.g. Porec) or Italy (e.g. Trieste) prior to heading back on the highway to Ljubljana and your flight home.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival into Ljubljana

Arrive in Ljubljana; private transfer to your hotel in city centre. Balance of day sightseeing.

    • Overnight in Ljubljana, e.g. City Hotel (Vander Urbani Hotel) - stay 2 nights.

  • Day 2: Ljubljana

Full day for sightseeing in Ljubljana and local area on foot and by public transport. Visit the castle on foot or by taking a ride in the funicular, consider a boat trip on the river or hiring bicycles to explore this compact city, including the huge Tivoli Park not far from the centre. Ljubljana has some great food and wine to sample, a fabulous market, a zoo, a museum of illusions and many different types of tour, e.g. Segway, Moustache Tour.

  • Day 3: Ljubljana - Lake Bled

Deliver hire car to your hotel (or nearest safe parking place) and drive north to Lake Bled and the Julian Alps. Possible detours en route include the small town of Kranj, the historic village of Radovljica and maybe even Kamnik and the Velika Planina.

    • Overnight at Lake Bled, e.g. Pension Mayer, Villa Preseren or Hotel Triglav - stay 2 nights.

  • Day 4: Lake Bled

Full day to explore the lake, including the island by Pletna Boat and the castle; you can walk or cycle around the full shoreline of the lake and explore further on trails in and around the Triglav National Park. On the shore of the lake there is a summer toboggan run, a zip line, mini-golf and nearby is Lake Bohinj and the Vogel cable car to the west and to the north, the Vintgar Gorge.

NB. you could choose to extend your stay in Lake Bled to explore the area more fully or even to take a day trip into the mountgains by train. The alternative would be to consider a few nights in Kranjska Gora, e.g. Hotel Skipass or Bovec (via the incredible Vrsic Pass), e.g. Hotel Sanje Ob Soci or the equally stunning Logar Valley, e.g. Hotel Plesnik thereby extending your holiday to around 10 days or more.

  • Day 5: Lake Bled - Postojna

We suggest taking scenic route through mountains via Bohinj, Most na Soci and Idrija to Postojna; a picnic may be a great idea to have along the way. A possible detour would be to Lake Bohinj and/or the Vogel mountain cable car.

    • Overnight in Postojna, e.g. Hotel Kras or Hotel Jama - stay 1 night.

If you stay an extra night here you will have time to visit Predjama Castle and maybe also the Skocjan Caves and home of the Lipizzaner Horses.

  • Days 6 & 7: Postojna - Isola (or Piran)

Visit the show caves first thing in the morning (they are just a short walk from both hotels and tickets can be purchased online) and then time to enjoy the general surroundings away from the main crowds. Afterwards, head south to the Adriatic coast and the charming resort of Isola (or a little further to the historic town of Piran). Enjoy some relaxation time on the Slovenian coast at your choice of resort.

    • Overnight in Isola, e.g. Hotel Marina (or Hotel Piran in Piran) - stay 2 nights.

  • Day 8: Adriatic coast - Ljubljana

Take highway back to Ljubljana for flight home, drop off car at airport. If you have an early flight we can arrange a hotel in Kranj which is near to the airport, e.g. Hotel Actum.

  • Prices & Departure Dates

Prices shown are 'per person' in UK Pounds and are based on a travelling party of at least 2 adults. A single supplement needs to be added to the twin/double price if single rooms are required.

Reviews

"A wonderful holiday. Slovenia is beautiful and the driving was easy. All the directions you gave us worked although we did get lost getting through Kamnic on the way to the Logar Valley. Finding Pension Mayer in Bled was also a little challenge. Another day in Ljubljana would have been nice, but we did only have eleven days overall. All the hotels were very good - Pension Mayer, where the staff were wonderful and we left as friends - is worth a mention. The upgrade to a sea view room in Piran was well worth it and this is a superb hotel. Postojna town was a disappointment, but we did enjoy Predjama castle. "

T Gough, UK, Sept 2018

"The trip was most enjoyable and the arrangements went like clockwork. We were blessed with wonderful weather too. It is a most attractive country with lovely scenery and excellent tourist infrastructure. The hotels in the capital and Piran were beyond reproach. Your agent Amathus was most helpful when needed. It whets the appetitie for Montenegro next year with you."

B Ackerman, South Africa, Sept 2018

"Overall loved the itinerary and great hotels and Slovenia is definitely worth a visit. Thank you!"

H Murphy, Australia, Sept 2018

"A big thank you for a most enjoyable time in Slovenia. We had no problems at all with any of the bookings. All four of us were very appreciative of the quality of the hotels, and the clear travel directions...Our eight night stay in Slovenia has left us with a great feeling for the place and we will be recommending Slovenia and your company to our friends and family. We felt the organisation of the whole trip was outstanding and very good value and would like to choose another venue with you in the future, providing old age doesn't prevent us from travelling the long journey from Australia. Many thanks once again."
