Day Trip Ideas for Holidaymakers on Alonissos

Boat Excursions from Alonissos

SKANTZOURA

The rarely visited island of Skantzoura and its shores of white marble and the nearby island of Polemika, are important habitats for the rare Audouins Gull and the Eleonoras Falcon. Swimming and snorkelling on a beautiful bay and a short walk over the marble shores will take you up to the old farmhouse and ruined monastery from where the panoramic views of the Marine Park are truly spectacular. A stop on the way back to Alonnisos at the Two Brothers islands for swimming and snorkelling.

PERISTERA

Heading along the coastline of Alonnisos we cross over to the coast of Peristera and make for Vassiliko bay. Those who wish may join Chris for the walk over the island to Peristera Bay. The views to Alonnisos and the islands of the Marine Park are spectacular from here. Visit a ruined hill top settlement and a natural spring trickling from the rocks. Back on the boat, the exploration of the coastline of Persitera continues with stops for swimming before heading back to Alonnisos.

SNORKELLING

This excursion takes you along the coasts of Alonnisos and Peristera where we have found the most beautiful and interesting snorkelling areas. The scenery is fantastic and it's a chance to see some of the hidden beauties of the area. Being a passageway since the ancient times, this area was a haven for pirates. We have lunch at pirate's cove and even visit two shipwrecks.

SUNSET TRIP

An alternative way to spend your evening...

Visit the monastery on the little island of Ayios Yorgos... Swim & Snorkel in a secluded bay... Relax with a glass or three of wine or Ouzo as you watch the sun go down over the islands...but keep a lookout for dolphins... Dine together at a quiet beachside taverna... Sail back to Patitiri by starlight...

MARINE PARK CRUISE (Kira Panagia)

Cruising along the coastline of Alonnisos, we make a brief stop at the Blue Cave before leaving Alonnisos behind and heading for our first stop at Monastery Bay on Kira Panagia. A short walk will take us to the old monastery and a tour. After relaxing, you may join Chris on another walk from the monastery over the island to the magnificent bay of Agios Petros. After swimming in the crystal clear seas, we head back from Kira Panagia, the largest of the deserted islands

Walking excursions in Alonnisos

KASTANA GORGE

This walk will take you to one of the most remote parts of the island and some of the most unusual scenery with the guide who discovered the route. This gorge is unspoilt, unmarked, unpaved and involves walking over rocky terrain in parts. We leave Patitiri by taxi for our start point at the little church of Ayios Yorgos and then begin our descent through open countryside with wonderful views to the surrounding islands. Our route then descends into the gorge and we re-emerge at a lovely old olive grove by the sea. Here we stop for a swim, to eat lunch and to relax. We are then collected by boat for the return journey to Patitiri along virtually the entire eastern coastline of Alonnisos passing many points of interest en route.

AGII ANARGIRI

A nice way to see the southwest part of Alonnisos and a good introduction to the fishing villages and countryside surrounding Patitiri. Visit the main pine resin collection point and learn of the methods and uses of resin. Visit the recently restored 12th century chapel of Agii Anargiri from where there are wonderful views across to Skopelos and Pelion before returning to Patitiri.

SOUTHEAST COAST COUNTRYSIDE

This walk has been a firm favourite over the last few years and you will see a wide variety of countryside. We leave Patitiri by taxi and start our walk through open countryside, making our way towards the little cluster of houses at Mourtero and down to the coastal settlement of Vamvakies, which is one of the main locations for local caiques to be taken out of the sea, repaired and then re-launched. From here we literally walk along hidden beaches to the little fishing village of Kalamakia and then on to Steni Vala, where we stop for a swim and lunch. Our walk then carries on along the coast and up over the hills to the village of Isiomata, from where we follow a seasonal river bed down through shady olive groves and pine forest to the beautiful beach of Lefto Gialos for a refreshing final swim before joining our boat for the return journey to Patitiri.

AGIOS KONSTANTINOS

Leaving Patitiri by taxi we head for the starting point of our walk at the hill top settlement of Agios Konstantinos. Walking down we stop at the lovely little church of Agios Konstantinos and continue over the hills, making frequent stops to admire the stunning scenery. Along the way we will see an ancient stone circle and the remains of an old shepherds settlement. The scenery now changes as we drop down through old olive groves towards the coastline and choose our swimming spot on one of the remote beaches. After swimming, we then continue along a range of coastal tracks and footpaths as we make our way along this little- visited part of the island on the northwest coast before heading back to Patitiri.

OLD ALONNISOS

From Patitiri we make our way up the old donkey track to the ancient hill top village of Alonnisos once the capital of the island, stopping to admire the views on our way. We then pass through the village and begin our climb to the top of Kalovoulos which stands at 325m above sea level. We take a well earned break at the top to take in the stunning views across to Skopelos island, the Pelion to the west and the surrounding islands of the Marine Park. On a clear day both Mount Athos and Mount Olympus may also be seen. We then make our way back down, via the threshing circles and the church of Agios Yiannis and onto the beach at Megalos Mourtias via the lovely forests and olive groves of Kato Chorafi. Here we stop to swim, have lunch and to relax. We then continue along a coastal path at the edge of the forest on our way back to Patitiri.
