Situated in the heart of the Medina, near the Bab Marrakech (western gate), Les Heures Bleues is Essaouira's newest and one of its most luxurious riads. In fact the property has become part of the highly regarded Relais & Chateaux Association - this has been one the key goals of the property's owners and together with the many touches of luxury we feel confident to recommend this riad as a 'chic' retreat in Essaouira.
It is a pleasure to step into its cool interior courtyard furnished with palms. The mixture of rooms and suites is a delight – there are four themes running throughout the riad – African with quirky zebra print cushion covers, English with printed bedspreads, Oriental with its spicy reds and ochres and the fresh colours of the Portuguese, reflecting the chequered history of Essaouira. Bathrooms blend perfectly with each themed room.
The house consists of a ground floor and 3 upper floors plus terrace so a lift is very welcome for the weary or less infirm.
A short walk away from the main square and scenic harbour or just five minutes from the sandy beaches. The hotel offers a scenic view of the Essaouira bay from its exquisite roof garden.
Accommodation:
15 standard rooms plus 20 suites - all en suite with shower and bath (4 have private balconies with sea views). Interconnecting rooms for families are available. All rooms enjoy a/c, satellite television, DVD, and a safe. The terrace in front of each room and suite looks down to the courtyard below; and there is a window or two in each room from which you can watch daily life in Essaouira.
All suites have a non traditional fireplace as a centrepiece and have a large seating area as well as a writing desk at the entrance; rooms are smaller but equally as much thought has been given with complimentary bathrobes and slippers.
NB: Prices include complimentary soft drinks.
Facilities:
The piece de resistance of this wonderful house must be the pool on the roof. Of a decent size it enjoys uninterrupted views of the city, bustling harbour and the ever changing sea. It is a glorious place to enjoy a cooling breeze during the heat of the day.
Relax in the afternoon with a hammam or spa treatment available on the premises. A one hour programme of hammam, gommage, body wrap and massage costs just 500 dirhams. The sweet scents of Jasmin and lemon make you feel immediately relaxed.
There is no need to stray too far in the evenings – Les Heures Bleues has a superb restaurant with a Moroccan emphasis (gastronomic restaurant with a top Michelin chef from Europe on hand to offer very high quality cuisine - and a pretty decent choice of wine too) and then retire to the English salon for a cognac whilst the pianist entertains you.
