High Atlas Country Hiking

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: GRADE ONE - WALKING MOSTLY ON PATHS AT LOWER LEVELS, SOMETIMES ROCKY, SELDOM FLAT, FOR ABOUT 6 HOURS EACH DAY. GOOD TRAINERS WOULD DO, BUT TAKE BOOTS IF YOU ARE USED TO THEM. FOR ANYONE WHO LEADS A REASONABLY ACTIVE LIFE. HIKING ALWAYS INVOLVES SOME EFFORT.

MARRAKECH - IMLIL - TIZI n'TAMATERT - IMENANE VALLEY - MARRAKECH.

Departure from Marrakech around 7.30 in the morning for a stimulating 2 to 3 hour drive south over the Tizi n'Techt snaking down the mountain sides in breathtaking loops to the Berber town of Imlil (1740m), called Morocco's' Little Chamonix', set way up in the foothills of the Western High Atlas mountains and a main trailhead. Our route to Imlil takes us up to the Berber villages of Tahmoute, where we shall stop for a photo-op of dromedaries, horses and of donkey-drawn ploughs straight out of the Middle Ages, and of n'Ougmadane, with its old kasbahs, to continue on up the winding road to the kasbahs of Tamadout. We continue through the Ghighia Valley, where the Valleys of Imaradene and Imlil meet, passing alongside the riverside Berber village of Azrguen n'Moulay Brahim, with its gentle Berber people herding their dromedaries and horses. We continue through the valley of the Assif n'Aït Mizane, passing by the Berber villages of Tagaddirt and Aït Ali Aguersiouâl through the Asni Hills- varying in height between 2020m and 2460m .

At Imlil, we shall leave our vehicle to take a welcome glass of mint tea or coffee on a river bank near a gîte d'étape prior to setting out towards the east up and down the slopes for some two hours via winding mule tracks, through the Berber village of Tamatert (1830m) and up to Tizi n'Tamatert (2262m). From here we have a splendid panorama of the surrounding peaks and valleys of Imlil. From here we take a piste trail for another two hours hiking to the foot of the Jebel Aksouâl (3842m) until we reach Ouanskhra (2100m). Refreshed after our picnic, we set off down along the pretty Imenane Valley, in the upper foothills of Oukaïmeden, passing through the little Berber hamlets of Tamgisste, Tinerhourine and Ikiss, where we shall picnic on a river bank set amongst walnut trees. We then ascend through the Tizi n'Aguensiouâl (1938m) until we reach the Berber village of Aguensiouâl (1600m) where we shall rejoin our vehicle to take us back over the Tizi n'Techt to Marrakech by around 7 in the evening, after a day of walking amidst mountains, cool valleys and welcoming villages.
