About Bodo

Bodø is the "Gateway to the Lofoten Islands"; there are links by sea and air in all directions and it is easy to get here by rail from Trondheim and Oslo. Bodø is north of the Arctic Circle so has constant daylight from May to Mid August and midnight sun for 6 weeks around the summer solstice.

The mountain backdrop of the mainland is spectacular but also dramatic is the rugged line of jagged peaks which comprise the Lofoten Islands, which at sunset can appear like a silhouette. The Northern Lights can sometimes be seen on dark, clear evenings from September to April. Since the sun never sets in summer, you can wander barefoot along the chalk-white beaches just outside Bodø. Admire the midnight sun from Mount Rønvikfjellet, or watch it linger on the horizon as you enjoy the tranquillity on the legendary beach at Mjelle.

Kjerringøy is just half an hour's drive from Bodø and is situated in a picturesque, coastal-alpine landscape sheltered from the ocean by small islands, islets and rocks. Also near Bodø is the world's strongest maelstrom, Saltstraumen. Visit when the tide is at its highest and marvel at the forces of nature. Every six hours, 400 million cubic metres of water rush through the 150-metre wide and 3-kilometre long sound connecting the Saltfjord and the Skjerstadfjord at speeds of up to 20 knots. The mighty whirlpools formed by this phenomenon can be up to 10 metres in diameter and 4-5 metres deep. Saltstraumen is famous for its abundance of fish, including cod, saithe, wolf fish and halibut. There are daily express boats to many of the islands and fishing villages.

Travelling to Bodø

A flight from Oslo to Bodø only takes one hour and 20 minutes, and the airport is located just 2 kilometres from the town centre. Widerøe's airport network ensures that places like Svolvær, Leknes, Narvik, Brønnøysund and Røst are less than an hour away. There are also direct flights to Tromsø, Bergen and Oslo-Rygge.

You can also catch the Nordlandsbanen train from Trondheim and enjoy the countryside at close quarters on the way. Or you can board the Hurtigruten ship and sail along what is arguably the world's most beautiful coastline before disembarking in Bodø.
