About Galaxidi - quiet port town
Galaxidi is a quiet port within driving distance to Delphi; it's an alternative stopover for those visiting the ancient site.
This picturesque village is a nautical city with 4000 years of heritage. It has resisted attacks from Franks, Catalans, Knights of Rhodes and Turkish pirates during its turbulent history. In the 19thC it was a major nautical force and had a large merchant fleet of more than 400 ships. Wealth accumulated during that time is reflected in the size and style of local architecture. You can still see many of these grand houses which once belonged to shipowners. Back in the day Galaxidi had a population of 60,000, no fewer that 60 of these were shipping magnates.
As well as being a quieter place to stay there are superb beaches with crystal green-blue waters near the town and a small port encircled by restaurants and friendly bars.
