Dar Ness
(Essaouira)

An 18th Century traditional riad located very near to the fishing harbour of Essaouira's Medina. An elegant mid-priced riad, ideal for the first time visitor. A small intimate atmosphere pervades this gem of a find and the friendliness of the owner James, is such that you truly feel as though you have entered an old friend’s home.
Dar Ness has been featured in many magazines since it opened 18 months ago – James, ever the perfectionist has still plans for several of the bathrooms but it is obvious that a lot of care has been lavished on the property – traditional furnishings sit alongside watercolours of Morocco. The original stonework has remained in place above each doorway. Bright colours really make the place come alive, blues and whites of Essaouira, occasionally a pale green dresser perfectly matching the hand painted mirror above, thick Berber blankets take the chill off in winter.
Emphasis here is on escaping the frantic pace of life – this is something that is very dear to James, having decided to move to Essaouira after a particularly demanding job.
Accommodation
6 standard rooms and 3 mini-suites, all en suite with shower.
When James bought the house there were 35 persons living here – 6 families- but now the house is a little less crowded having as it does only 9 rooms. These are all simple in style – mostly doubles or twins there is also a triple suite with a lounge and a large room sleeping a family or 4 with a double bed and 2 twin beds.
One unusual little room lies between floors and has a window looking down to the courtyard. This would not be a suitable room for anyone over 6ft as you have to duck going through the door! The double bed with Berber throw almost fills the room and the bathroom is reached via a wooden ladder done to the floor below. It would be wise to watch your step carefully if you had a few glasses of wine at dinner!!
Facilities:
Roof terraces, dining room, lounge. The dining room can accommodate 10 persons and lunch and dinner are on request here After sampling the delicious food you can relax in the cosy lunge with a crackling fire if it is cold and listen to music or read a book.
