About Riad Kalaa

The Riad Kalaa is a Kasbah from the Almoravide dynasty built by the Emir Ben Tachfine on the banks of the Bouregreg river. It was constructed in 1140 AD for protection against enemy forces. A recent archeological dig near the Oudayas excavated sections of the original Kasbah. Constructed in 1815, in the heart of the medina ramparts, only a few steps from the ocean, the Riad Kalaa has undergone a thorough and lengthy restoration, using artisan workmanship traditional to Morocco.

Riad Kalaa is very close to the famous Kasbah des Oudayas, ancient den of the Sale pirates and the prison where Robinson Crusoe was detained for some time. The narrow streets painted in blue whitewash will lead you to the Café Maure where you can sip a mint tea while you gaze at the Bouregreg river estuary, the traditional fishing boats and the new marina.

Accommodation

The riad is unusually large with 11 rooms and suites, all en suite with air conditioning, heating, flat screen TV, wifi, safe and hairdryer. The architecture of the riad is quite unique, with nooks and crannies, terraces, alcoves and salons, ensuring an intimate, harmonious and restful ambiance for all.

  • Rooms - the charming and comfortable Jasmine, Amber, Musk and Sandalwood rooms on the terrace by the pool, have been thoughtfully decorated down to the smallest detail. Amber, Jasmin and Sandalwood rooms all have a fireplace.
  • Saharan Suites (Berber, Nomad and Touareg) are three large bedrooms on the ground floor, which can be double or twin. They have a minibar with mineral water and soft drink. The Touareg Suite has a fireplace.
  • Oriental Suites (Courtisane, Favorite and Sultane) are located on the ground floor around the central patio. Spacious and functional, they are split-level: a living room, which can serve as a children's room, furnished with carved cedar benches; a pretty mezzanine bedroom opening onto a bathroom. Minibar with mineral water and soft drinks. One or two extra beds can be added.
  • Star Suite is the pearl of the riad. A multitude of stars fill the rooms: table lamps with embossed brass shades, natural tiled flooring and pearly grey tadelakt walls. The suite is situated on the first floor by the swimming pool and is accessed from the reading room via a beautiful staircase illuminated by a glass dome. The bathroom runs the whole length of the bedroom and has a shower open to the sky. There are snug alcove seats in the fireplace, making it a real haven of peace. As well as a minibar you'll find a courtesy tray in this suite, with a selection of teas and coffees.
