Lefkas Town

One of the first sights you will see upon approaching Lefkas Town is the Santa Mavra Fortress built in the early 14th century in an attempt to deal with pirate raids. The castle controls the passage from the mainland to the island so it has always been first point of attack by invaders and was bombed during WW2. A few years later Lefkas Town faced another crisis when an earthquake destroyed the town. It was rebuilt to withstand future earthquakes so each resident built his house with stone floors and brightly painted wooden and corrugated iron upper storeys and this has resulted in interesting architecture for which the town is known today. Each house was built very close to the other and surrounded by narrow pedestrian alleys.

Lefkas Town churches were influenced more by Italian style and with their Renaissance style paintings they resemble the Catholic style more than the Orthodox. Worth visiting is Agios Spyridon, built in the 17th century. Other interesting and beautiful churches can be found in the capital such as the 18th century church of Agios Nikolaos, the 17th century church of Agios Dimitrios, the 18th century church of Pantokrator and the church of the Presentation of the Virgin. Most of these churches house fine works from the Ionian School of Painting. The town has several museums – Archaeological Museum and Folklore Museum, which depicts traditional Lefkadian life.

A new marina was built in 2002 and has a capacity for over 600 boats. It is a lovely place to explore as it has a variety of shops and cafes as well as an artificial island, bridges, canals, quays and green lawns. Lefkas Town is mainly pedestrianised which makes it a pleasant place to wander, especially in the evenings when the locals come out for their ‘volta’ and the cafes are buzzing.

Faneromeni Monastery lies a few kilometres from town, perched on a hill with stunning views towards the town and channel and the mainland opposite.

According to tradition, the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni was originally built in 1634 on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of hunting. On this site, the students of Apostle Paul had preached Christianity some centuries ago.

The monastery was twice destroyed by fire in the 19th century but it was renovated in the 1960s. Today, it hosts an interesting Ecclesiastical Museum with rare Byzantine icons, old manuscripts and gospels.

The Hotel Nirikos in Lefkas Town has been operating since 1979 and was fully renovated in 2008. The hotel is a few steps away from the marina.
