Surrounded by fertile farm land Santana, named after St. Anne, grows a profusion of fruit – plums, kiwi fruit and mulberries. It is a beautiful village on the north coast, characterised by its distinctive, triangular houses. These palheiros (haylofts) are made of straw and stone and have served as stables and small dwellings over the years. They are only just big enough for a person to stand in! The area itself is a handy stopping off point for a night or so as it is within reach of some of Madeira’s most impressive mountain scenery. Santana is also where you find Madeira’s Theme Park, opened in October 2004. This includes many attractions for young and old related to history, traditions and culture of the people of Madeira. |
The O Colmo is situated in the centre of Santana, in a peaceful location with gorgeous views towards the mountains and ocean. The restaurant offers traditional dishes and later you can relax in the piano bar. The hotel also has an indoor heated swimming pool, gym, jacuzzi and turkish bath.
