Skiathos - self-catering Accommodation
(The Emerald of the Aegean)

The idyllic island of Skiathos lies in the northern Aegean, opposite the enchanting Mount Pelion. Together with Skopelos, Alonissos, Skyros and a handful of smaller uninhabited islands it makes up the Sporades, one of the loveliest island groups of Greece. Luxuriant and idyllic, famed for its golden beaches, Skiathos is the most developed island of the Sporades. The island has had the same name throughout its history, it is derived from the Greek word "skia", which means shade, and refers to the thick woods that cover it.
Skiathos covers 61 square kilometres, being about 12 kilometres from east to west and 6 kilometres at its widest point. Irregular in shape, it is largely mountainous and mostly covered with pines, but walnut and plane trees can also be found as well as olive trees and vines. Springs and streams abound, and there are also two small lagoons. The length of Skiathos' coastline is a remarkable 44 kilometres. It consists of a succession of coves and bays, that add up to more than 60 beaches. There are several smaller islets around the island.
Skiathos enjoys almost constant sunshine during the high season. The weather is warm from May until September, tempered at the height of the summer by the "Meltemi", the Aegean's cool northerly wind. Access to Skiathos is easy. Charter flights run all through the summer from most European countries. Olympic Airways has frequent scheduled flights from Athens. Ferry boats and hydrofoils connect the island with Volos, Aghios Konstantinos and Thessaloniki on the mainland.
