Skopelos
(Sporades Islands)

Lying between Skiathos and Alonissos and the largest of the Sporades is Skopelos. More mountainous than Skiathos its pine clad slopes sweep down through olive, plum and walnut groves to sand and shingle bays with crystal clear waters. Skopelos is a haven for artists and walkers keen to seek out the island's hidden churches and monasteries. East of the town, on the shore, are vestiges of a classical building (possibly the Asklepieion), fast being eroded by the sea. In the Episkopi monastery fragments remain of the church of 1078, possibly on the spot where Reginus, first bishop and patron saint of Skopelos, was martyred in 362 AD.
The island's capital, Skopelos Town, is, in our opinion, one of the prettiest in Greece and provides a breathtaking first impression of the island when arriving by boat. Rising above you is maze of blindingly white houses overhung by wooden balconies, bedecked with pink and red bouganvillea. Steep, narrow alleyways wind their way upwards from the Venetain Church passing by many little churches, said to number 123. Many only open their doors once a year on the Saint's Day which they represent.
Skopelos has much more of a traditional feel to it than Skiathos. The town offers a nice mixture of tourist facilities, an abundance of craft shops and Greek village life. There are smart boutiques, cafe-bars and restaurants, as well as more traditional tavernas. The local bus wends its way along the west coast, passing by a series of beautiful coves, all the way to the northernmost town of Glossa. Perched on a hillside and enjoying wonderful views towards Skiathos this sleepy little town has a few houses, a taverna, cafe and a few shops.

Our opinion: Located in the centre of town and enjoying excellent views over the bay, a delightful hotel with some character and good quality rooms. |
The hotel is situated next to the town beach and the archaelogical site of the ancient Peparithos "Asklipio". It is only 200m from the port. |
