Transylvania to the fascinating Danube Delta [via Bucharest]

About Romania Self Drive 2 - Dracula to the Delta

Transylvania's highlights, the cosmopolitan capital of Bucharest and the incredible natural beauty of the Danube Delta; a fly drive from "Dracula to the Delta".

START/FINISH - Bucharest.

Activity code: ROFD02

Duration: 9 Days

This superb holiday is a "sample" tour combining the best bits of the ancient heart of Romania - Transylvania, the resurgent cosmopolitan capital - Bucharest and the fascinating undiscovered Danube Delta. It is a holiday itinerary full of history and dramatic scenery, a wonderful opportunity to visit two completely contrasting regions of the country with a few days city break at one end.

Transylvania is home to some of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns, such as Brasov featuring Old Saxon architecture, cobblestone streets and pastel-coloured houses. There are many tiny shops offering antiques and fine hand-made products by local artisans across the region. Visitors to Transylvania will also encounter stunning castles. In close proximity to Brasov and Bran are the fortified churches at Harman, with its massive 13th Saxon towers, and Prejmer, the largest fortified church in Southeastern Europe. Transylvania’s multi-ethnic heritage (folk costumes, architecture, cuisine, music and festivals) is alive and well in the small villages of Transylvania.

Bucharest is the main city of the region of Wallachia and the capital of Romania; first documented in 1459 by Vlad Tepes. Bucharest and its cultural scene is going to surprise you: 37 museums, 22 theatres, 18 art galleries, opera houses and concert halls await your visit. The best way to explore Bucharest is to take a stroll along Calea Victoriei to Piata Revolutiei, site of the Romanian Athenaeum and the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum of Art. The old city centre (near Lispcani) is a must to understand why Bucharest was known as "Little Paris" in the 1920s.

The Danube Delta is a 2,200-square-mile wildlife reserve designated by UNESCO as a "Biosphere Reservation" stretching along the northern section of Romania’s 152-mile Black Sea coast. From the port city of Tulcea, a cruise through the Delta’s waterways gives travellers a glimpse of the abundant wildlife and the traditional fishing villages; floating reed islands, sand dunes and waterways offer shelter to over 300 species of birds, countless fish and 1,150 species of plants.

  • Day 1: Arrival, Bucharest

Fly into Bucharest International Airport; your driver will await you and provide a private transfer into Bucharest and your hotel for the night.

Bucharest is one of the least known European capitals, yet the sixth largest European city by population. Today (or tomorrow, depending upon your flight arrival time) we can include a tour of Bucharest, with stops on the way for a better look at the monuments and historical buildings. A visit to the outstanding open air Village Museum, see the Arc de Triomphe, drive along Calea Victoriei, stop in Palace Square, a place full of history, see the iconic Athenaeum, the Revolution Square, the monumental Parliament Palace, the University Square with the University building and the National Theatre opposite. Afterwards, stroll around the narrow streets of the historic quarter, one of the most popular leisure districts.

As part of your introduction to the country we can also arrange a traditional Romanian dinner at Caru cu Bere restaurant, emblematic of the glittering Bucharest Belle Epoque. Afterwards, a private transfer back to your accommodation.

    • Accommodation at a hotel in the city centre, e.g. Novotel, Hotel Mercure, Hotel Europa Royale.

  • Day 2: Bucharest - Bran

Pick up hire car and drive north from Bucharest and head to Sinaia, the "Pearl of the Carpathians" to visit Peles Castle, the former summer residence of the Romanian royal family. Afterwards continue your route along the beautiful Prahova Valley via Busteni to Azuga; here we suggest a lunch at Rhein Cellars with [optional] wine tasting. Continue to Bran and visit Bran Castle (time permitting), well known as Dracula's Castle.

    • Dinner and accommodation in a traditional guesthouse near Bran, e.g. Muntele Rece Pension in Moicieu or Guest House Hora cu Brazi in Zarnesti (stay 2 nights).

  • Day 3: Bran & Brasov

Today on this holiday you have many choices:

We suggest a visit to the Bear Sanctuary near Zarnesti which has tours in the mornings (pre-booking recommended) then the impressive historical city of Brasov where we recommend lunch at a restaurant in the old centre. In the afternoon, returning to Bran to visit the nearby Rasnov Fortress; you could also take a walk in the Bucegi Mountains or at the mountain resort of Poiana Brasov or simply to marvel at the scenery. Drive back to your guest house for dinner.

  • Days 4 & 5: Bran - Buzau - Tulcea

Depart for a relatively long drive towards the delta which you may like to split into two days, stopping en route at Buzau. Following the road east out of Brasov our recommendation would be a visit to the fortified church at Prejmer. From here head once more through the Carpathian range to the magnificent plains beyond which begin at Buzau.

Continuing east via the bridge over the Danube near Braila the road skirts the border with Ukraine heading to Tulcea, an important harbour since ancient times. Arrive in Tulcea and take walk on the esplanade admiring the Danube River.

    • Dinner and accommodation in the Delta Hotel in Tulcea.

  • Days 6 & 7: Danube Delta

After breakfast you will be transferred by boat to Crisan Village, on the Sulina Branch, the shortest of the three branches. Crisan Village is a fishermen's village with a few houses spreading over the right bank of Sulina and a fishery on the other bank and it makes an excellent base for exploring the surrounding lakes and canals.

In these 2 full days you will discover this Unesco Natural World Heritage site, formed around the three main channels of the Danube, named after their respective ports: Chilia (in the north), Sulina (in the middle), and Sfantu Gheorghe (in the south). The local people will lead you through the narrow canals, and show the beautiful scenery and nature.

All tours will be conducted in small motor boats. You will explore some beautiful lakes, Bogdaproste, Trei Iezare and Cazanele, be taken by boat to Litcov Channel, Sontea Channel and Mila 36 Channel to experience an amazing mixture of scenery, reeds, birds, fishermen, water lilies, sunrise and sunset. You will meet the local people and will get a full flavour of the local cuisine. You should also have time to fit in a safari-like trip to the Letea Forest to see wild horses.

    • Dinner and accommodation in a 4 star guesthouse in Crisan village, e.g. Pension Ovidiu - 2nts.

  • Day 8: Tulcea - Constanta

After breakfast leave Danube Delta and return by boat to Tulcea then south to visit Constanta to see the Roman Mosaic, the Mosque, Genoese Lighthouse, Archaelogical Park, Roman City Wall and the Victory Monument.

    • Overnight accommodation in hotel in Constanta, e.g. Hotel Carol.

  • Day 9: Constanta - Bucharest, Departure

Drive along the highway directly to Bucharest airport for your flight home.
