START / FINISH - Marrakech (or Agadir)

Activity code: MORFD01

Duration: 8 days

Morocco has so many quiet, open roads - particularly the ones heading through the Atlas Mountains; why not consider a self drive holiday that offers within just one week a journey full of contrasts? Starting in Marrakech you can drive a circuit connecting the mysterious southern town of Taroudannt, the exciting former Portuguese town of Essaouira and the High Atlas. The scenery along this route is stunning and the roads are a real driving treat, for example, the Moulay Brahim Gorges heading into the High Atlas from Marrakech, the twisting Tizi n'Test road over to Taroudannt and the rugged coast road from Agadir all the way up to Essaouira.

We have many years of experience putting together practical and interesting journeys for our customers and we recommend this route to make the most of your time in this fascinating country. We are happy to discuss any reasonable modifications to tailor-make a holiday to suit your requirements for any or all of the following - number of persons travelling, preferred accommodation type, UK departure airport, overall duration, pre-booked activities and much more.

As this route is a circuit starting and finishing in Marrakech you could travel initially via the High Atlas and then return via the coast road or vice versa. It is also possible to start and finish in Agadir and to extend very easily with extra nights in one or more of the locations. The new highways linking Marrakech, Agadir and Essaouira will cut down journey times when you wish to get from A to B quickly but this also means that the other roads will now be quieter and a more pleasant alternative for sightseeing at a gentler pace (NB. tolls apply on the main highways). Roads around the country are improving all the time and are actually very good in most places, even in the mountains and desert areas they are now mostly asphalted.

Highlights

Itinerary

Arrival into Marrakech and private transfer directly to your chosen hotel or riad.

A full day in Marrakech - a private half day guided tour of Marrakech's main historic sights, including the souks and the Djemma el Fna is included.

Plenty of additional sightseeing & optional activities, e.g. a cookery class, quad biking in the Palmeraie, a visit to the incredible Cascades of Ouzoud.

Take delivery of your hire car at your hotel or riad in the morning and drive south to Marigha via a scenic road which passes up through the Moulay Brahim Gorge and the market town of Asni. From Asni you may like to detour up the small valley to the small village of Imlil, the trailhead for trekkers to the summit of Mount Toubkal.

Recommended places to stay

Continue your journey south to Taroudannt via the scenic Tizi'n'Test route across the High Atlas from the N'Fis valley. This is a stunning road but since the new Marrakech to Agadir highway opened it has not been maintained to the same standard as before so please allow a full day to make the journey - the views and solitude en route are well worth it. We also recommend a visit to the fabulous Tinmal Mosque (near Ijoukak) en route.

Recommended places to stay

Relax in Taroudant and visit the old walled town at leisure. Other options include a drive into the Anti-Atlas Mountains, such as the road to Tafraoute, maybe even a little further afield to Tiznit, the Massa National Park or the dramatic and remote coastline to south, such as Mirleft or Sidi Ifni.

Head towards Agadir (optional visit) and then drive up the stunning Atlantic coast road to Essaouira.

Relax in Essaouira; an easy town to explore on foot. Why not indulge in a fresh fish BBQ lunch at the harbour then explore the sea-facing battlements and craft shops afterwards. You may also like to spend time on the huge beach, play golf or enjoy some surfing.

Drive inland back to Marrakech and drop off the car at the airport for your flight home; or return to Marrakech for last night if you have an early flight departure (on day 9).
