Split
Split is most famous as the location of the retirement home for the Emperor Diocletian. Today, Split's amazing architecture and state of preservence make it one of the most beautiful stages in the world for Verdi's Aida, performed every year as part of the Split Summer Festival. There are two main squares, the Pjaca and the Peristyle which give the city of Split a stylish and laid-back sophistication. Sitting at one of the cafes lining the palm-shaded waterfront is an indulgent pleasure. The overall urban structure is common for mediaeval cities and along the with stunning Roman palace is protected by UNESCO.
The Emperor's Palace now forms the extraordinary old town of Split, covering almost 7 acres with gates through the walls leading in and out of the main streets. Diocletian's quarters were in the southern, seaward end of the complex whilst the staff and Legionaries lived in the northern section. Other sights in the old city include the Papalic Palace, now the city museum, the Cathedral of St Dominus (once the mausoleum of the emperor) and the gates themselves and nearby Mediaeval streets are certainly worthy of some time exploring on foot.

Today’s Split is the product of 17 centuries of building, renovating and remodelling, so that the new of today meshes with the old of yesterday. At the core of this sprawling cityscape is the palace that Emperor Diocletian built for his golden years at the turn of the 4th century. What began as an imperial residence and fortified camp is today an intriguing warren of narrow cobblestone streets, where pre-Romanesque churches live alongside Gothic chapels, histroy-filled museums abut galleries of contemporary art and delicious-smelling restaurants compete with bustling cafes for the attention of passers-by.
Wandering through the open air market or sitting on sun-warmed stone, it is easy to forget that behind the two-metre-thick walls, there is a modern, busy port. And it is that juxtaposition which lies at the very heart of Split’s charm. The mausoleum of the pagan Roman emperor evolved with time into world’s oldest Roman Catholic church.
Split and Trogir are close to each
other so we would suggest choosing one or the other as a base to
explore both on any itinerary. |
Trogir
Rising out of the sea on its own island (just 20m off the mainland), this magnificent little town was founded by the Greeks and built up by the Romans, Croats and Venetians. Its maze of small streets is a delightful car-free place with many bars and restaurants, dominated by the Cathedral. Opposite the Cathedral on the main square is the Cipiko Palace, a lavishly decorated 15th Century mansion with triple-arched windows.
Trogir is a unique cultural monument and therefore it was registered on the UNESCO list in 1997. The unique historical centre and the richness of cultural and historical heritage, which inspired chance travellers as well as travel writers through centuries, offers visitors an unforgettable encounter of past and present.
THE ISLAND OF CIOVO
The island is connected to the main land by a bridge. Its nature, history, ruins and beaches make it ideal for relaxation. There are numerous little churches scattered all over the island with its remarkable treasures, e.g the church dedicated to the Holy Virgin set by the sea in a peaceful oasis of pine trees, the Franciscan monastery of Saint Anthony, the Dominican monastery of Saint Cross in the vicinity of the Hotel Sveti Kriz.
