From the small, delightful kasbah-like Hotel Fibule Du Drâa in the oasis village of Zagora we set off at 07:00 with our driver and English-speaking guide further south in our air-conditioned 4WD for our adventure into a desert surrounded by many small dunes, interspersed with the black gravelly ‘Reg’ stretches of the Jbel Tadrart basin. Excerpt from Day 2: Here we stop for our field picnic in the welcoming shade of a small oasis, to continue on through the village of Zaouiat Sidi Abdenbi to the flat dried bed of the Lake Iriqui, not too long ago the seasonal paradise of millions of migratory birds. With any luck, we could still stumble across dinosaur fossils. After approx. 85km into the harsh and naked countryside we arrive at the now-famous and more impressive dunes of this western extension of the Sahara - Dayet (Pool) Ch’ggaga (6° 15’ W) and our Nomad bivouac site, apparently in the middle of nowhere. Excerpt from Day 3: Having chosen to make this comprehensive - and somewhat "off-the-beaten-track journey in a 4WD, we now get to experience a hike which comparatively few enthusiasts have made - a hike from the Dadès Gorge to the Todra (Todgha) across the High and Middle Atlas ranges. A 5½ hour hike eastwards along the Tizgui n'Ouadda Valley and rocky outcrops up to the Tizi n'Ouano (2800m) where we shall stop for our picnic amidst impressively craggy surroundings - and the occasional golden eagle, rock thrushes, bulbuls, wheatear - and ground squirrels.
