Hydra
A beautiful island just a short hydrofoil or flying dolphin trip from Athens.
Hydra is one of the most picturesque islands in the Saronic Gulf. It is a cosmopolitan island, attracting many visitors each year. The main town of the island is Hydra Town which is where you find the main port. We recommend Hydra as a high quality destination, ideal for those who wish to get away from the main "tourist" islands.

Increased commerce and trading in the 19th century allowed this town and island to prosper: many merchants and ship owners built stunning mansions on the hillsides around the town and it is the sight of these imposing buildings which greets you as you enter the horse-shoe shaped harbour. Each mansion was built with its own private church and priest! Many of these houses are now small museums. As a result of this history the town is completely unspoiled by modern architecture – laws now prohibit the building of any constructions, which do not conform to the traditional and authentic style.
Hydra is one of the few places in the world where no cars, motorcycles or even bicycles are allowed. The only transport available are donkeys and mules! Hydra was first discovered in the fifties and sixties by a group of artists who were attracted by the wonderful light, magnificent sunsets and natural beauty of Hydra. The island is still home to many artists and photographers who came to Hydra seeking inspiration for their work. Indeed every summer there are exhibitions by international artists who have made their homes here.
