Lefkas

Lefkas is one of the Eptanisa (Seven Islands) in the Ionian; it is the fourth largest island in the chain. It makes a perfect twin centre destination with either Parga or Sivota as the island is in fact linked to the mainland by a swing bridge. Lefkas is an astonishingly beautiful island and is one of our favourites at Rediscover the World. We would definitely recommend car hire to get the most from your visit and to explore all of those out of the way villages, nestling in lush pine forests, and fantastic beaches on the west coast.

The name Lefkas comes from ‘Leucos’ meaning white, referring to the imposing white cliffs at the southern tip of the island, reputed by sailors to be one of the entrances to the Underworld. The cliffs on the west coast are equally as dramatic, as are the seemingly endless stretches of beach. Many holidaymakers head to the east of the island to Nikiana or to the very bustling resort of Nidri with its plethora of restaurants, clubs and shops. Backed by mountains Nidri has a spectacular view of the tiny islands dotted around, Meganissi and Scorpios being the most famous. The harbour is always lively and sitting at one of the harbourside tavernas is a pleasant way to pass an evening. Beaches in this area are mostly pebbly but there is a good choice of watersports in the area. There is also a wide range of boat trips, mainly to the picturesque little islands a few kilometres off shore.

The south of the island is different again – sheltered bays mark this as a popular sailing area, whilst in the mountainous interior of the island amongst the pine forests you will find little villages where the way of life has not altered much in many year. A good example of this still-traditional way of life is Karya, a pretty village in the hills where you can buy intricate hand made lacework and embroidery. Every August the village holds a reconstruction of a typical Lefkadian wedding. Its peaceful square shaded by trees is a cool place in which to relax after browsing the shops for that gift.

Or why not take to the seas to sail around the little islands off the east coast, the most famous being Scorpios, the ‘Onassis island’. We cannot recommend this island highly enough.

  Our choice of Resorts:

The capital of the island has a good range of shops, museums and cafes in which to while away a pleasant hour or two! A recently opened marina provides a great focal point for the town.

This idyllic village, a short distance from Lefkas Town, has a working fishing fleet and the tavernas at the harbour have an excellent reputation for fish.

Nikiana is located half way between Lefkas Town and the busier Nidri. Nestled amongst the dense woods, Nikiana stretches along the sea front, offering a wide range of facilities and excellent accommodation.

Agios Nikitas is a small and picturesque village on the northwest coast, great views, excellent food and a selection of the islands best beaches are close by.

The second largest resort on the island and a popular place for windsurfing..

Perigiali is the quiet northern edge of Nidri which can be considered a separate little resort in its own right. Ideal for a family holiday where access to facilities is important.
