Libya is a huge country, full of contrasts - an unspoilt Mediterranean coast with stunning Roman and Greek ruins (some of the best preserved in the world); just inland there is a line of green mountains and then there is the extensive desert stretching south to the middle of the Sahara.

The country is usually divided into three regions: Tripolitana around the capital in the northwest; Cyrenica in the northeast centred on Benghazi and the vast Fezzan region in the south. For lovers of classical cities, the uncrowded ruins of Leptis Magna, Sabratha and Cyrene will have you in heaven, whilst the interior of Libya has much to offer too. The Fezzan is not just an endless sand sea or rocky scrub desert, there are areas of truly magical mountainous scenery, stunning contrasts where dunes meet lakes and sites where deeply ancient civilisations flourished during periods of pre-history when the Sahara region was much more friendly in terms of its climate. Rock art in situ and in the museums will attest to this.

Geographically, the Libyan coast is 2000 km long; the coastal valleys, especially in the western region, are covered with forests of orange and olive trees. The mountains in the eastern region of Aljabal Alakhdar serve as a cool retreat during the hot summer. The fertile plains, which are mainly in the two coastal regions of Tripolitania and Cyrenica, are exceptionally pleasant in the spring when covered with bright wild flowers, adopting the appearance of a colourful mosaic. The desert in the south with its splendid oases, inhabited by the great Touaregs, camels and the odd herd of sheep and goats on the move in search of water, is a place of meditation and gives you a sense of absolute freedom.
