Welcome to Rediscover Madeira

Madeira is a delightful semi-tropical island, often referred to as the 'Garden of the Atlantic'. Gardens and public parks with glorious displays of flowers are in abundance here. Walking along the island's levadas is another popular pastime as is simply relaxing and enjoying the culture amidst some winter sun. Madeira is an ideal destination for those looking for a luxury break, a walking holiday or one of our excellent and great value fly-drives to explore this stunningly scenic island. Madeira's capital, Funchal, has many festivals during the year, great shopping, a large variety of restaurants and plenty of high quality accommodation including small luxury Quinta-style hotels.

What does Rediscover Madeira offer ?

Around the island we offer a personal selection of small hotels, many of which are included in our fly-drive programme or can be arranged as holidays off the beaten track in their own right. Why not combine a fly-drive or stay on Madeira with Porto Santo? Madeira's sister island is easily accessible by boat or plane and has fabulous, uncrowded beaches.

Why Rediscover Madeira ?

Dawn, one of the directors of Rediscover the World lived and worked on Madeira in the mid 1990s. This experience, together with the knowledge gained from frequent visits to new hotels and locations, enables us to provide you with the most up-to-date and fullest possible assistance in planning your ideal holiday - we can put together any tailor made itinerary to suit your budget. We are fully bonded and provide full financial security and assistance should any part of your holiday not happen entirely to plan. If you were to assemble your holiday yourself you would not have this sort of protection.

Fly-drives and Levada Walking.

During recent years Madeira has been fortunate enough to obtain substantial funding for the development of new roads and tunnels which have opened up the island for easier and quicker exploration. This has meant that the older, more scenic, roads are now significantly less congested and a pleasure to drive along. It also means that you can take advantage of certain stretches of the new highway to allow you extra time in the more scenic areas or at the hotels on your fly drive. There is a main highway from Machico to Ribeiro Brava in the south as well as tunnels through the island from south to north between Ribeiro Brava and Sao Vicente and between Machico and Faial.

If exploring by foot is more your thing then we recommend levada walking; a popular activity on Madeira. Levadas are water channels hollowed out of the ground or carved into rock which go under mountains and along valleys. This network was begun by the first Portuguese settlers who found it an ideal way of getting abundant water from the central mountains to cultivated land in the south. This unique irrigation system extends over 1335 miles and is an excellent way of exploring Madeira’s interior.
