Oia

Santorini's crowning glory, which has inspired countless works of art. Oia's buildings cling to its steep cliff, affording the most amazing views on the island and one of the most renowned sunsets in the whole of Greece, when the sun seems to melt away into the sea. As befits a resort such as Oia its hotels and apartments are of a very high standard, making this a perfect place to honeymoon, or to have a romantic break.
Oia was once the richest village on the island and many ship owners had their homes here. The 1956 earthquake partly destroyed the town but it has been reconstructed very sympathetically in the Cycladic style.
Many people come from all over the island to watch the incredible sunset. There is parking just outside the town as Oia is pedestrianised. Get there early for a prime spot! There is a little rocky outpost which probably has the best views.
Below the town, down 200 steps there are two small harbours, one for fishing boats and the other for excursion boats. There are excellent fish tavernas at both harbours.
