Kasbah of Telouet, near the Tichka Pass

Early morning (08.00) departure from Marrakech south in our vehicle through the Glaoua countryside and up through exhilarating hairpin bends into the Western High Atlas mountains and Ait Ourir Taddert (1650m) to alight at the top of the Tizi n‘Tichka (2260m) to take in the vista dominated by peaks of over 2500m. We start our descent from the Tizi to the Assif Telouet and the Glaoui Kasbah where we stop for a visit of this dramatic red-earthen eyrie, fast crumbling under the attacks of the elements. After a stop for lunch at the Kasbah we rejoin our vehicle and return to the Tichka Pass and onward to the Tichka plateau where we will hike for approximately one hour to Afensou where we will meet our mule team who will prepare our overnight camp.

Here many nomadic families spend the summer months grazing their sheep and goats. We end the day camping on the Yagour Plateau (2600m). 6hrs trek.

walking through the Berber villages on quite narrow paths
Ourika Valley - looking down from Setti Fadma

We leave the plateau to follow mule tracks through magnificent Berber villages and the relatively highly-populated Ourika Valley. Picnic lunch in the valley and then a gradual ascent through the valley to reach the tranquil camp site at Agadir n‘Ait Boulemane (or gite). 6 1/2 hrs trek.

After breakfast we continue our hike through the beautiful Ourika valley and towards the Oukaimedan Massif. Our path takes us to a small peak which dominates the Setti Fadma valley and through the villages of Taddart and Anfli to arrive in the terraced village of Timichchi where we will spend the night in a Berber family’s home. 5 hrs trek.

We set out today up to the Berber village of Aremd (1843m), the last village in the valley, and then continue for a further 8km to the quaint village of  Sidi Chamharouch, a Berber village set beside a waterfall and a small stream, with its pisé houses seeming to be built chaotically one into another. This village is a place of pilgrimage for devout Muslims with a Marabout shrine said to be a relic of a pre-Islamic cult. We take a break for our picnic within full view of the Jbel Toubkal, at 4167m the highest peak in the Maghreb, prior to setting off up to the Toubkal refuge for our dinner and overnight accommodation in the refuge.

DAY 9: TOUBKAL REFUGE - TOUBKAL SUMMIT - TOUBKAL REFUGE

walking to the summit of Mout Toubkal
a successful climb of the summit of Mount Toubkal
walking down along the quieter path - this is one section where a trekking pole may be useful

A very early breakfast to set off around 05.30, well wrapped up against the elements, to attain, after a 3 hour steep, yet not technically difficult, climb the highest summit in the Maghreb (4167m). The panorama from the summit is stunning. After a snack at the peak, we descend by the same route (or a detour via the cirque du nord down past the smugglers' plane wreckage from the 1960s) to the refuge for lunch, a well-earned rest and overnight.

We continue descending to Aremd where we shall stop for our picnic prior to continuing along the valley floor to finally arrive at Imlil to enjoy a glass of mint tea at the Gite of our head guide before rejoining our vehicle back to Marrakech.
