4WD EXCURSION TO THE DUNES AT CH'GAGGA
2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT- (ref: ITCLFD16z)
‘Meharée’ : Trek with 1 dromedary per person + 1 pack camel.
DAY 1: LA FIBULE DU DRÂA, ZAGORA - M’HAMID - OUM LÂALAG - CH’GGAGA DUNES
Leaving La Fibule early, around 08.00, with our driver and English-speaking guide to set off even further south in our air-conditioned 4WD for our adventure into a desert surrounded by many small dunes, interspersed with the black gravelly ‘Reg’ stretches of the Jbel Tadrart basin. Some 34 miles south of Zagora we arrive at the little village of Oulad driss in the Hamada du Drâa, close to the undefined border with Algeria. Once a stop for the trans-saharan caravans of salt, gold and slaves - and where the Oued Drâa finally sinks into the desert.

Now we meet our camel teams for our “méharée” of some 3 hours until we reach the dunes of Erg Lihoudi where we will stop for a lunch of salad, brochettes and fresh fruit in the welcome shade of the Nomad camp. After our post-lunch siesta we continue by 4WD to the grand dunes of Ch’gagga. Whilst dinner is being prepared, we might take time out to stretch our limbs, set up our photo shoot for the oncoming sunset as the heavens change their colour from bright blue to cobalt, to yellow, to gold, to purple, to black; or take a shower and simply chill out!!
DAY 2: CH'GAGGA - ZAGORA.
After breakfast following a glorious sunrise we continue by 4WD back to M’Hamid, once an important trading post and dromedary market for the famous ‘Blue Men’ (Touaregs from Mauretania and Chad) and is still a meeting point for the nomads from the Sahel and deep Sahara. We arrive at the village of Tagounite and then follow the piste to cross the Kettoua Palmeraie and visit the famous Library and pottery at Tamegroute.
Our last 18kms remain until we reach Zagora and the Fibule Du Drâa- around 12.00 for a quick shower and lunch. You may have decided to stay here overnight in this pleasant hotel or, perhaps, you have opted to set out now, refreshed, back up the Drâa Valley to Agdz or the French Protectorate-era city of Ouarzazate and beyond.

Customer comments:
"Our camel excursion was very memorable: Youssef who was our guide, was fantastic and had a great sense of humour - he may deal with tour groups every day but he certainly made us feel special."
