Activity code: ITCTTM10m

Difficulty: GRADE TWO to THREE - Between moderate and strenuous. Good boots essential. We recommend that you be confident of your fitness and endurance levels; preferably having had previous experience of trekking at altitude and in variations of climate Full support team.

Duration: 11 Days Trek ONLY / 14 Days Holiday version

START / FINISH - Marrakech.

This itinerary is our recommended trek for a longer visit to the Toubkal National Park; there is some good acclimatisation and fantastic scenery. Something very different from the basic "up and down" option for Jbel Toubkal; a great route which begins in the beautiful Ourika Valley, heads up to Oukaimeden (Morocco's ski resort) and then detours south off the beaten track taking in the stunning Lake Ifni and offering plenty of superb walking. Finally we have chosen the less travelled Tizi Aghelzim route back to Imlil.

Early morning departure from Marrakech for a pleasant drive up into the foothills of the Western High Atlas ranges to arrive at the trailhead in the Berber village of Imi Ourhlad (1430m). From here you begin today's 5 hour hike, meeting up with the mules and Berber muleteer crew - always a fun part of hiking in the High Atlas. With paths branching out all around set out up along a trail across the Assif Imlil to cross the Tizi n'Imsker (1708m). Once over the hump your guide will prepare your picnic on the banks of the Assif Imenane near the Berber village of Imsker. The afternoon's hike goes along the river's side until you reach the remarkable terraced village of Arg (1780m) - where Sir Winston Churchill loved to paint - to set up camp, or stop in a Berber family's home - the choice is yours. Whilst dinner is being prepared, you might like to take a stroll around this delightful village and surrounding countryside.

    • Trekking Time: 5 hours
    • Overnight in Berber family home in Arg (1780m)
    • Meals: Lunch, Dinner.

After breakfast strike out for today's 6.5 hour hike up between nut trees and through several Berber hamlets and villages, including those of Tidili and Gueliz until you reach the village of Oussertek (2406m), where you'll take a break and picnic in a private garden in the village centre. The afternoon hike takes you up through the Tizi n'Oukaimeden (2668m) and then down to the campsite and dinner for the night. The option exists for you to stay in the Refuge on this high plateau.

    • Trekking Time: 6-7 hours
    • Overnight at Refuge or camping in Oukaimeden (2500m).
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Once breakfasted your guide will lead you, on the start of a 7 hours hike, along a piste and further up along an adjoining winding mule trail through the Tizi n'Ouattar (2994m). From here you have a long winding descent through the rocks until you reach the village of Agounsa where your guide will prepare a welcome picnic. The afternoon is spent in gradual descent along the Assif Timichi, passing through the Berber village of Tamgisste and Timichi until your campsite and dinner for the night outside the village of Tivirdivi (2006m). Again, there's the option of over-nighting in a Berber family's house.

    • Trekking Time: 7 hours
    • Overnight at Berber family home or camping in Tivirdivi (2000m).
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Breakfast, and another 7 hours of fascinating scenery await you; hike down to the river and on through the villages of Anfli and Tadrarte, then up the trail taking you through the Tizi n'Tamatert (2508m) to the village of Tamatert where you'll stop for a picnic. The afternoon's 2 hour hike takes you up to Assaka and down through the forest where your support team will set up camp (1900m) or you could opt to stay in a Berber family's home.

    • Trekking Time: 7 hours
    • Overnight at Berber family home or camping in Assaka (1900m).
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Today, there is an 8 hour hike; firstly, through the village of Amenzal and then along the river to arrive, after 2 hours, at the upper foothills of the Tizi n'Oumchichka (2520m) for your picnic near a spring. The afternoon is spent hiking down along rocky trails trodden in by mule caravans for a couple of hours and then down along winding mule trails to the Aazib n'Ouadouz (1980m), for dinner and overnight camp.

    • Trekking Time: 8 hours
    • Overnight camping at Aazib n'Ouadouz (1980m).
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

From the aazib start up to the Tizi Tagorouad (2927m) and directly on to the Tizi n'Ourie (3109m) where your guide will prepare today's field picnic surrounded by peaks and valleys. This afternoon, slowly descend along zigzagging paths into the Ighir n'Tagnite until you arrive at the Berber village of Tagnite in the Tafnoute Valley. A brief stop before hiking down further until reaching the village of Amsouzert (1740m) where your dinner will be prepared in a Berber family's home.

    • Trekking Time: 5-6 hours
    • Overnight at Berber family home in Amsouzert (1740m).
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

After breakfast, today's hike is shorter than the previous days', for tomorrow and the day after are reasonably tough going. With your guide, head south up the valley of the Assif Izli, through the villages of Abtraoui, Takaterte and Imhilene until you arrive at Lake Ifni, (2295m) after some 4 hours. Here your guide will prepare your picnic in the midst of quiet waters and steep slopes of the looming mountains. Later on the team will set up camp whilst you stroll around the lake shore or, according to the season, take a welcome swim whilst the evening's meal is being prepared.

    • Trekking Time: 4 hours
    • Overnight camping just below Lake Ifni (2200m).
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Breakfasted and refreshed, set out towards the north west up to the difficult col of the Tizi n'Ounoums (2841m). Once through the pass stop for a picnic amongst awesome surroundings of the Toubkal Massif. From here, continue directly to the Toubkal Refuge (3207m) where you can either camp on the surrounding slopes or overnight in the Refuge. Whilst tonight's dinner is being prepared, there'll be ample opportunity to stroll around the area and look at tomorrow's challenge - the summit of the highest peak in the Maghreb.

    • Trekking Time: 6 hours
    • Overnight at Toubkal Refuge (3207m).
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

A very early breakfast today as you and your guide set out around 6am to attain, after a three hour, non-technical but steep climb, the highest peak in the Maghreb (4167m). The panorama from here is simply stunning. This remarkable climb and view is what you have come so far for. Whenever you are ready, your guide will lead you on the Ikkhibi Sud or South Cirque for a straightforward 2 to 3 hour descent back to the area near the Refuge for a picnic (this descent can be steep in places and the route is covered with many loose stones so we would recommend a walking pole for this section for anyone with aching joints or who is not 100% sure footed). Return to the Toubkal Refuge for a welcome dinner and overnight accommodation.

    • Trekking Time: 7 hours
    • Overnight at Toubkal Refuge (3207m).
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

Breakfasted and off on a 7 hour hike towards Tamsoult. Up towards Tizi n'Aguelzim (3560m) and a magnificent view of the Arzedene Valley whilst you have your day's picnic. Then it's on for some 3 to 4 hours down some 72 hairpin tracks - only recently opened - passing by the Tamsoult Cascade, also known as the Irhoulidene Cascade (2204m) down to the bivvy site and dinner for the night at the Aazib Tizikert (2145m).

    • Trekking Time: 7 hours
    • Overnight camping at Aazib Tizikert (2145m).
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner.

With Jbel Toubkal behind you, set off for 2 hours to the north up to Tizi M'zik (2664m) where you'll stop for a picnic near the Berber village of M'zik and an awesome panorama of the Imlil Valley and of the Adrars Algouli and El Hajj. From Mzik head east and down for 3 hours along winding mule tracks to the trailhead village of Imlil (1740m) and your awaiting transport back to Marrakech by around 3pm.
