Lying 200km above the Arctic Circle Saariselka is the most northerly resort in Lapland. It is surrounded by gentle hills and snow-laden forests, it's where rugged nature and ancient mysticism go hand in hand. The native Sami, with their fascinating cultural heritage and hospitable charm, welcome and delight visitors with ancient tales and legends.
Your accommodation on this short break will be the Star Arctic Hotel. This hotel is the ideal location for hunting for the Northern Lights due to the lack of light pollution and prime position at the top of the fell. You will enjoy some stunning views of Saariselkä below.

Upon arrival at Ivalo Airport you will be greeted by a reindeer with its Sami handler and one of Santa's elves, presenting a delightful photo opportunity to capture your family's first few minutes in Santa's homeland. A short, comfortable 25-minute transfer to Saariselka - just enough time to see if the children can spot more reindeer or elves in the forest. Once in Saariselka you will collect your thermal suits and boots before making your way to the Star Arctic Hotel. This hotel is the ideal location for hunting for the Northern Lights due to the lack of light pollution and prime position at the top of the fell. You will enjoy some stunning views of Saariselkä below.
Spend some time settling into your accommodation & meet the helpful representatives who will give you all the information you need to have the complete Lapland Experience. For the rest of the afternoon you can play in the snow or perhaps try some tobogganing
Your first evening starts with an Aurora Wilderness Dinner and Igloo experience. This is the perfect location to spot the Northern Lights with the restaurant and igloos set in the woods away from light pollution. Make your way into the igloos for some enchanting stories of Sami myths about the incredible Northern lights.
There is a host of snow and ice activities waiting for you as well, from tobogganing, Crazy reindeer golf, kick sleighs and tandem skiing.
This extra day on the longer 4 day break will normally be your second day, and gives you the chance to start building up the excitement, with your choice of fantastic Optional Adventures.
Try a daytime Snowmobile Safari where parents take it in turns to drive the snowmobile and children will be towed in a special sled by the guide, or the evening snowmobile option, the Northern Lights Adventure. Perhaps enjoy a few hours skiing or Saariselkä’s toboggan run. Or you may prefer a Reindeer Sleigh ride.
Back at the Star Arctic enjoy dinner, excitement mounting for tomorrow's Big Day.
A host of great adventures awaits so wrap up warmly and pack some snacks as you will be outside in the true wilderness of Lapland with some fantastic camera moments for the whole family.
Drive your own snowmobile through the snowy wilderness. Adults will share a snowmobile and have the opportunity to swap half way. The children will travel in a sleigh, pulled by one of the local guides while you will follow behind in convoy.
This is arguably one of the favourite activities: a visit to a Husky Farm. Here you'll take control of your own team of huskies who will be eagerly waiting to take you on an adrenaline-fuelled ride through Lapland’s Winter Wonderland. All the grown-ups have the opportunity to drive the husky sled while excitable children enjoy the thrilling ride from the comfort of the sled. Not only this but you will also visit the dogs in their home and learn all about taking care of a team of huskies.
Lunch will be taken back at your hotel, a chance to warm up and have a simple but tasty lunch to get you ready for the afternoon ahead.
Next it’s time to transfer to the activity site with lots of snow activities to enjoy. The pinnacle of the day for many is the enchanting search for Santa while being guided by one of his reindeer.
Refreshments are included too, and are available throughout the day, for those times when a few minutes warming up round a crackling log fire is welcomed.
Your day finishes back at your hotel where you will enjoy your evening dinner while reminiscing about your exciting day and the memories you have made.
Fun-time again, with the chance to thrill to another big adventure, either pre-booked in the UK or chosen the day before from the range of Optional Adventures.
You may have fallen in love with the huskies and want to enjoy an even longer Husky Sled ride or relax on Rudolph's Reindeer Run or perhaps take off on a Family Snowmobile Safari for high-octane thrills – there are plenty of options to choose from.
This morning also gives you the chance to browse the souvenir shops in the village. Choose from traditional hand made Lappish items and clothes, Christmas gifts and toys. You will then be collected by coach from your doorstep, and taken to the airport to catch your flight home to a chorus of fond farewells.
*The amount of time allowed to do these activities depends on the actual flight departure time.*
