About Palekastro
Palekastro, a charming former farming village in eastern Crete, has grown in recent years yet still retains its delightful character and authentic Cretan atmosphere. This tranquil location provides an excellent base for exploring some of the region’s most stunning beaches, gorges, and historic sites.
Nearby are the beautiful Blue Flag beaches of Chiona and Kouremenos, both perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and windsurfing. The tiny village of Agathia, with its sky-blue domed church, is a picture-perfect sight from afar. Culture and history enthusiasts will enjoy visits to the Monastery of Toplou, the Minoan Palace of Kato Zakros, and the smaller, palm-fringed version of Vai, Itanos.
The area around Palekastro is a paradise for walkers, with numerous gorges and scenic trails, including the famous Valley of the Dead, a fertile, almost sub-tropical valley filled with greenery. About 8 km away lies the world-renowned beach of Vai, with its silken pale sand and towering date palms, awarded Blue Flag status for its clean waters and excellent swimming conditions. This protected palm oasis stretches inland, with watersports and a selection of beach cafés providing refreshments for visitors.
Palekastro is the ideal destination for discerning travellers seeking peace, natural beauty, and authentic Cretan experiences, combining a serene village atmosphere with easy access to some of eastern Crete’s most remarkable landscapes and historic treasures.
