Delphi Tour

Summary

Once considered the centre of the ancient world but its fame and prestige extended much further than the boundaries of the Hellenic world.

Activity code: ATH07

Duration: Full day (with lunch)

This one day excursion to Delphi begins with a drive through the fertile plains of Boeotia, crossing the towns of Thebes - connected with the tragedy of Oedipus - Levadia and Arachova, famous for its colourful rugs and carpets (there will be a short stop here on the way back).

The site of Delphi sits on the slopes of Mount Parnassus in a landscape of unparalleled beauty. Delphi was famed for its oracle - pilgrims used to wend their way up the mountain to seek divine advice on various aspects of their lives - war, love or business affairs. The priestess would chant her prophecies, which would then be translated to the devotee.

At the site of Delphi you will visit the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Treasury of the Athenians, built in 490 BC after the Battle of Marathon and the museum, containing such masterpieces of Ancient Greek sculpture as the Athlete Agias and the famous bronze Charioteer. Lunch will be taken in the village of Delphi before returning to Athens, arriving back early evening.
