About Montenegro Self Drive 2 - Highlights Route
A shorter holiday exploring Montenegro using direct flights to Tivat. Designed as a circuit so you can choose your direction of travel.
Activity code: MOFDO2
Duration: 10 Days
START / FINISH - Tivat (or Podgorica)
A tour of Montenegro's "Highlights" - in just ten days you can explore the Durmitor National Park and the Tara Canyon; the two lake-based National Parks - Biogradsko and Plav (Prokletije); the Adriatic coast around Budva and the spectacular scenery of the Bay of Kotor.
The exploration begins straight away on this holiday as you can get your hire car directly at the airport and then you are free to enjoy the open coast road almost immediately, either around the bay to Kotor or south to Budva. After this brief stay at the coast you can begin your adventure into the mountains of Montenegro, although we recommend a visit en route to southern Europe's largest lake, Skadar.
Whilst travelling around inland Montenegro you will encounter forests, gorges, lakes, stunning views, traditional rural landscapes, monasteries, quiet roads and friendly and diverse people in locations such as Kolasin, Plav and Mojkovac. There's a lovely drive along the Tara river valley all the way to the Durmitor National Park where we recommend staying in the smal town of Zabljak. You have an impressive choice of things to do whilst in this northern region of the country - take a walk around the beautiful, pristine Black Lake, head to the nearby peaks or why not consider a simply incredible and unique experience at the Tara Canyon - the "hands free" zip wire ride.
On your way back to the coast you will drive along peaceful roads up and down to Niksic which is where you could detour to visit the famous Ostrog Monastery. More choices at this stage between the Zeta Valley to Podgorica and Cetinje or the route up past Lake Slano almost into Bosnia and then down to the Bay of Kotor at Risan. Whichever way you travel we feel that the best finale to this holiday is a few nights in Kotor where you can relax, enjoy some activities and sightseeing without your car.
Accommodation: the hotels in this itinerary are generally small, independent or family-run, properties which add significantly to your travel experience in this fascinating country (in the list below we have included our main recommendations together with suggestions for "boutique" hotels and deluxe options, please do not hesitate to request alternative hotels).

Head north inland climbing up alongside the Moraca valley to the stunning Crkvine pass en route to Kolasin. You then have one full day to explore the Biogradsko National Park and enjoy the pretty town of Kolasin. You can also consider a drive east over the beautiful Tresnjevik Pass heading towards the Kosovo/Albania border region to the Prokletije National Park and Lake Plav. If you wanted more time here we can add extra nights to do some fishing on the lake or to head off for a hike in the "Accursed Mountains" via the village of Gusinje.

Along the way you will see the famous Tara Canyon where you may wish to take the fabulous zip-wire. From here continue up to Zabljak in the heart of the Durmitor National Park for a couple of days.
A choice of routes south to Kotor; all routes begin with the road south to Niksic and then either south east via a visit to the Ostrog Monastery and Podgorica to Cetinje and Lovcen National Park or southwest along the shorter route over the mountains to Perast and directly to the Bay of Kotor.
Day 9 - a full day to enjoy the old town of Kotor and a possible attempt at the Kotor "staircase" up to the fortress. We will collect the car from you as you won't need it whilst in Kotor.

"On the whole a great time in a beautiful country. We found it valuable that you have travelled Montenegro and have a good knowledge of the country. What to do and see was useful and did most of them. So happy with the service you provided."

"Utterly wonderful trip. It was a pleasure to use your services right from initial inquiry to the trip itself. Everything went so smoothly and easily, it was a very relaxing and existing trip in equal measure. The hotels were all very different to each other, but that is a strength, not a criticism. Nice to experience different styles. We would also like to comment on how amazing the Vamoos app is! It is by far the best way to travel, even down to using the downloaded maps for hiking trails in the mountains - they were as accurate as any map we could bit whilst there! The app just made everything so easy. The only point we'd raise is that the parking for Hotel Monte Cristo in Kotor is not where the map said. Apparently all the girls no longer use that car park, and instead each now has their own private, free car park. You provided the code for the barrier etc, but the directions provided currently go to the wrong car park. You just need to update your maps for that bit - hope that's helpful! REPLY FROM REDISCOVER THE WORLD: ........ [thank you for your note, we have updated the map location for this hotel's car park, our sincere apologies]"

"We had a fabulous holiday. Everything worked out better than expected. We fully relaxed in the first part of our holiday in Budva and enjoyed the boat trip in the bay and the trip in the mountains plus fabulous views over Kotor Bay. Strangely one of our best meals in Budva was in the restaurant at the bus terminus as recommended in our guide book. Excellent food. Surrounded by greenery and fountains so could have been anywhere. The scenery and the alpine flowers were stunning throughout the trip. The weather was great and we enjoyed the beaches and swimming in the pools and the sea.... I would happily recommend your services. You responded quickly to all our enquiries and followed up to make our holiday everything we wanted it to be."
